Provide technical, logistical and analytical support and instructions for fisheries science studies and research that are conducted in the laboratory and in the field for Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). The incumbents will be responsible for performing work of a technical nature related to carrying out research programs leading to recommendations, technical advice, information and scientific data being provided to Department resource managers and scientists and to other federal regulatory agencies, professional fishers, aquatic industries, provincial agencies, First Nations, international organizations and the general public.

As a result of this process, a pool of candidates will be created to staff similar or identical positions with various tenures at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute in Mont-Joli, Quebec.
We currently have imminent needs for staffing 3 permanent or long-term positions:
- Technician assisting with research on groundfish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (permanent position)
- Technician specializing in taxonomy of marine organisms in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (permanent position)
- Technician assisting with research on pelagic fish in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (2 years term with possibility of extension)

EDUCATION
A recognized post-secondary diploma in wildlife management, or in a field of natural or applied sciences related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE
Experience in technical support and data collection for scientific field or laboratory projects in one of the following areas: population science, stock assessment, biodiversity science, aquatic invasive species, aquaculture science, genomics or biotechnology, oceanography.
Experience in providing advice on sampling methods, planning of experiments or selection of equipment / devices, in the context of scientific projects carried out in the field or in the laboratory in the biological sciences.
Experience in performing quantitative analyzes and interpreting data using statistical or analytical tools or techniques.

EXPERIENCES
Experience conducting scientific technical work at sea on small, medium or large boats or vessels.
Experience in planning and logistics of field work.
Experience in planning and logistics of laboratory work.
Experience in planning and conducting experiments with live fishes and invertebrates in the laboratory, and use of specialized techniques.
Experience in providing advice on selection of scientific equipment, and use and calibration of specialized scientific equipment
Experience working with live aquatic organisms in the laboratory or in the field.
Experience in identification (taxonomy) of marine organisms:
i. Phytoplankton
ii. Zooplankton, fish and invertebrate larvae
iii. Macro-invertebrates
iv. Fishes
Experience with usual techniques for morphometric and other biological measurements, particularly for fishes and invertebrates in the field or laboratory.
Experience with the methods used for determining the age of marine organisms.
Experience with the methods used in genetics and genomics.
Experience in underwater imaging, image analysis and processing.
Experience with the methods used in physical, chemical or biological oceanographic sampling.
Experiments with hydroacoustic methods for estimating populations of fish or invertebrates.
Experience in using scientific software, for example: statistical analyses, image analysis, graphing, GIS, basic programming (R, SAS), etc.
Experience in the development or use of databases.
Experience in scientific SCUBA diving.
Various language requirements

Hold a diving certificate issued by an agency recognized in Canada.
Accept to work outside in inclement weather and in isolated locations.
