The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) is a federal department responsible to ensure the integrity and marketability of grain for the domestic and international grain trade, from producer to global customer.

Intent of the process

This process will be used to staff (1) one 9-month term position.

The pool may be created to staff similar positions with various linguistic profiles and tenures(indeterminate, specified term, acting, deployment, secondment).

Education:
A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
Recent* and significant**experience using insect keys and to identify insects to species.

Recent* and significant** experience is defined as experience acquired over a period of 6 months or more within the last 5 years.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Education:
Degree, applied degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution (e.g. college, CEGEP, university) with concentration in entomology.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
- Recent* and significant **experience of insect control products and techniques.
- Significant** experience with the use of standard business related computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet and database).
- Recent* experience working in grain elevators.

Recent* and significant** experience is defined as experience acquired over a period of 6 months or more within the last 5 years.

Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the principles and practises associated with collection and handling of samples for the purposes of insect extraction.
- Knowledge of insect pests injurious to stored grain.

Abilities:
- Ability to sort and properly manipulate insects under a stereo microscope for the purposes of identification.
- Ability to understand, organize and follow instructions pertaining to work in a quality assessment program.
- Ability to effectively work independently in grain elevators and the laboratory.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Operational Requirements:
- Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain dust / soil, and to outdoor conditions in an industrial environment. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
- Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime, FREQUENTLY as required.
- Ability and willingness to travel, FREQUENTLY as required, including on short notice.
- Ability and willingness to work in and around moving equipment in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

- Willingness to participate in mandatory Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) training courses.
- Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any work related site.
- Valid driver's license OR personal mobility in the time and manner normally associated with possession and use of a valid driver's license.
- Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain dust / soil, and to outdoor conditions in an industrial environment. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.

Candidates from outside the federal public service will be required to pay for their own travel, if invited to an interview.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
