Assessment accommodation

The Canadian Center for Meteorological and Environmental Prediction is located in Dorval. Consequently, the candidate need to be mobile for Dorval. It will not be possible to work remotely.

Duties

As a scientific analyst programmer, you will participate in the development, optimization and support of a set of systems linked to the ingestion of observation data (terrestrial, aerial and satellite), to environmental modeling (meteorological, oceanic, hydrological, etc.), scientific visualization and post-processing of large volumes of data. These systems are run on one of the most powerful high availability supercomputing architecture in the world, used in a 24/7 operational environment. You will also have the opportunity to participate in avant-garde projects such as the application of artificial intelligence and data processing on distributed platforms.

Work environment

The Meteorological and Environmental Prediction Center of Canada (CPMEC) is one of the 5 largest centers in numerical environmental forecasting in the world. This center brings together expertise in research and development of atmospheric, oceanic, hydrodynamic and urban modeling, as well as one of the most powerful supercomputing platforms. This allow us to provide numerical data and forecasts as well as the most recent observations to help decision-making and planning and to inform citizens of the potential impacts of the weather in the medium and long term.

Intent of the process

The anticipatory pool of qualified candidates that will be established in this process could be used to proceed with indeterminate appointment, specified period appointment, deployment, acting appointment (including extension), assigment or secondment in similar CS-02 positions within Environment and Climate Change Canada in Dorval.

EDUCATION

• Graduation with a degree (bachelor), from a recognized post-secondary institution, in Computer Science, Computer applications, Mathematics and Computer science, Physics and Computer science, Biology and Computer science, Chemistry and Computer science or in Engineering (with acceptable specialization in software engineering or in computer science).

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

• Recent and significant * experience in applying and implementing the principles of software engineering in a Unix/Linux environment;
• Recent and significant * experience in programming in a Unix/Linux environment;
• Recent and significant * experience programming in at least one of the following interpreted programming languages: Python, Tcl/Tk, Ksh, or Bash;
• Experience in at least one of the following high level compiled programming languages: C, C++ or Fortran.

* An experience of at least one (1) year within the last ten (10) years. Experience gained during any internship is eligible.

• Graduation with a master, from a recognized post-secondary institution, in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mathematics and Computer science, Physics and Computer science, Biology and Computer science, Chemistry and Computer science, artificial intelligence or another specialty relevant to the position to be staffed;
• Graduation with a degree (bachelor), from a recognized post-secondary institution in Engineering (with acceptable specialization in software engineering or in computer science).

. Experience participating in a multidisciplinary scientific project;
. Experience developing databases and with the SQL language;
. Experience in project management;
. Experience working within a high performance computing environment(supercomputing);

Qualifications may be assessed by a variety of tools and methods. Therefore, the assessment of a portfolio, an online exam, a written exam, an interview, reference checks or other assessment methods may be used in this process. Candidates are expected to make a reasonable effort to make themselves available for assessments as scheduled. Pass marks will be established for each qualification. However, achieving the pass mark is not a guarantee of an appointment or that candidates will be put through the next stages of the assessment process. A cut-off score may be used and top-down approach may be used at any step if there is a sufficient number of candidates to meet immediate and anticipated staffing needs.

Indeterminate and determinate employees at the group and level or equivalent MAY be considered for Deployment, assignment or secondment. A preference MAY be given to deployments, assignments or secondments.

Qualified persons must meet each essential qualifications to be appointed to the position. However, a person may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications or organizational needs. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Preference

Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
