Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is looking for a Senior Stock Assessment Technician (EG-05) to provide operational direction and technical support for ongoing field and laboratory scientific studies and projects to support the assessment and research of Atlantic salmon in the Maritimes Region.
We are seeking a qualified person to fill one (1) Senior Stock Assessment Technician position.
A pool of qualified or partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions of various language requirements, tenures and security requirements within Science Branch, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region.

EDUCATION
Graduation with a diploma or a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural, physical, or applied science or engineering relevant to the duties of the position
EXPERIENCE
Experience planning, organizing and administering the logistical and technical components of scientific field or laboratory projects relating to aquatic species or environments in one of the following areas: population ecology, stock assessment, ecosystem science, biodiversity science, species at risk, aquaculture science, or genomics
Experience conducting field work in aquatic environments (freshwater, tidal, coastal, or marine)
Experience in the operation or maintenance and testing or calibrating of field or laboratory equipment
Experience in the collection, management and quality control of scientific data
Experience in the inputting, processing, preliminary analysis and interpretation of scientific data using computer software (for example MS Excel, MS Access, SAS, R)
Experience in providing technical advice or information on data quality and products, or equipment and methodologies, or validation of data, or project/survey goals and objectives
Experience in contributing to scientific papers/reports or technical or operational documents
Experience in managing scientific projects, including managing budgets and inventories
Experience collaborating and maintaining relationships with Indigenous groups and a variety of clients or stakeholders (e.g., government, industry, academia, non-governmental organizations)
EDUCATION
Graduation with a degree from a recognized university with an acceptable specialization in biology, environmental science, or natural resources management

EXPERIENCE
Experience working with live finfish in the laboratory or in the field (examples include capturing and handling, taking measurements, collecting samples, tagging);
Experience conducting land-based field work relating to the assessment of diadromous fish populations (using nets, barrier fences, video and/or sonar technology, electrofishing and/or snorkeling);
Experience with the field techniques and equipment used to enumerate juvenile and adult salmon populations (examples include fishway operations, electrofishing, working with seine or trap nets, snorkel surveys, working with rotary screw traps);
Experience operating and maintaining field equipment such as boats, motors, vehicles, nets, and biological sampling and mechanical equipment;
Experience searching and evaluating scientific or technical literature and using it to prepare reports or papers;
Experience supervising staff;
Experience managing financial and material resources within a field program, including camp facilities;
Experience with the planning, acquisition and use of material and financial resources, including procurement;
Experience working in a fish culture environment (examples include: monitoring and control of environmental factors, biosecurity, operation of complex rearing environments, monitoring aquatic animal health);
Experience in aquatic animal tagging and working with radio or acoustic telemetry equipment and telemetry data management;
Experience collecting data, performing analysis and interpreting results for laboratory based molecular biology techniques and/or protocols;
Experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized scientific equipment (examples include laboratory equipment, limnological equipment, telemetry equipment, water quality meters, velocity meters, electrofishers);
Experience with any of the following: GIS (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS), relational databases (e.g., Microsoft Access, SQL), programming languages (e.g., Matlab, R), and digital image software (e.g., ImageJ, Image-Pro).
