Duties

The jobs consist primarily of outdoor work in an agricultural research environment. Programs currently looking for research assistants are: Agronomy/Weeds, Cereal Breeding, Forage/Beef, Plant Pathology and Pulse Breeding.

Due to the breadth of the research undertaken at the Centre, the individual will provide support and technical assistance by doing some or all of the following:

• Setting up and seeding field research trials
• Plot maintenance
• Data collection: notes, counts and/or plant sampling
• Insect collection
• Soil sampling and processing
• Harvesting plants and research plots
• Processing harvested material and further quality data collection on grain samples
• Pest control and herbicide application
• Planting and maintaining nurseries
• Other general duties

The most successful students are usually those who enjoy outdoor work.

Work environment

The Lacombe Research and Development Centre is one of a network of 19 national agricultural research centres operated by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. The Centre conducts research in field crops and livestock production relevant to the Central Alberta region and develops integrated, sustainable crop and animal production systems and crop varieties for the short-season environments of the Parkland and northwestern Canada.

• Animal Science;
• Entomology;
• Food Science;
• Environmental Science;
• Microbiology;

• Plant Science;
• Soil Science;
• Biology;
• General studies that include one or more science courses;
or
• a related agricultural program.

Degree equivalency

Experience* conducting field or laboratory experiments.
Experience* collecting and performing analysis on samples.

Reliability Status security clearance - Each student hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) must meet the security requirements of the position as a condition of employment, and therefore will be asked by the hiring organization to complete security-relevant documents.

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Ability and willingness to work overtime.
Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
With appropriate safety precautions in place, ability and willingness to work in greenhouse, field and/or laboratory environments for extended periods at a time; ability and willingness to work with hazardous materials.
