The Engineering Services (ES) Group at CanmetENERGY-Ottawa is responsible for engineering, technical support and maintenance services, including the electrical installations in all the labs and pilot plant facilities. As a member of the electrical team within ES Group, the candidate will help with electrical services to clients (research scientists, research engineers, technicians/technologists or external clients) on projects funded by government departments, cost-recovery or external stakeholders such as power generating stations and oil companies. The job requires layout planning, electrical assembly, installation and testing of unique apparatus related to mechanical, electrical instrumentation and controls and/or hydraulic systems as part of industrial research applications. The candidate is also required to discuss project requirements with project teams and consult reference materials, as well as to ensure all electrical services comply with Canadian Electrical Codes and Canada Standard Association.

This position is located at the Bells Corners Complex, situated within Ottawa’s Greenbelt, yet close to restaurants and shopping within the area of Bells Corners. Situated between Nepean and Kanata, we are close to the Bayshore bus station as well as the Eagleson/Terry Fox Park and Ride with bus access to the Complex. This location also features trails and walking paths as well as workplace wellness programs including running, fitness and mental health initiatives to boost employee morale and work/life balance.
The intent of this process is to staff one EG-04 position for an indeterminate period.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar EG-04 positions within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Completion of a minimum two-year program from a recognized post-secondary institution in Electrical Technology, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Electrician License Certification (Ontario or Inter-provincial)
Experience in layout planning, installation and modification of commercial or industrial electrical equipment, instrumentation and process control
Experience in reading process and instrumentation diagrams
Experience in detecting, investigating and repairing irregularities and/or malfunctions in electrical equipment
Experience in setting up and carrying out preventive maintenance for electrical equipment

Knowledge of electrical circuits and control systems
Knowledge of electrical test and measurement equipment, and specific electrical tools and procedures such as 3-phase electrical analyzers
Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety procedures and guidelines

- Installation of gas sensing and monitoring systems
- Building control cabinets
