Duties

The successful candidate will be required to carry out research and development activities related to the application of machine learning techniques and approaches to the processing of electro-optical and infrared imagery collected with ground-based and airborne platforms. Task will include the development of software applications to support the validation of open source and custom machine learning approaches and the evaluation of processing results

Work environment

Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) is an agency of the Canadian Department of National Defence that responds to the scientific and technological needs of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). Its vision, mission and values guide Defence R&D Canada to ensure that the CAF remains scientifically and operationally relevant. The agency is made up of eight centers located across Canada with a corporate office in Ottawa.
The Valcartier Research Center (VRC) develops innovative technologies and systems in the fields of optronic systems, information systems and combat systems. Work will be conducted within the Tactical Surveillance and Reconnaissance Section (TSR), whose mandate is to provide the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Armed Forces, and Public Safety the leadership, world-class sciences and technologies capabilities for the exploitation of EO/IR sensors and systems to support intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance (ISR).

EDUCATION:
-Enrolment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in engineering, physics, or mathematics.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
- At least 6 months of experience in the development of machine learning algorithms for image processing.
- Experience in using practical machine learning development frameworks such as Keras, TensorFlow, PyTorch, Caffe2, Microsoft CNTK, Theano, and/or Lua/Torch.

KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of the principals and practices of science investigation;
- Knowledge of the principles of image processing.

ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively orally;
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

EDUCATION:
Completion of course work in any of the following subjects:
- Image processing;
-Computer programming (C++, Python, or equivalent); and
- Machine Learning.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
- Development and implementation of algorithms for image processing on embedded platforms (e.g. NVIDIA TX2, NVIDIA Xavier, Google Coral, Intel Neural Compute Stick (NCS));
- Development and implementation of algorithms for live processing of imagery acquired with electro-optical and infrared cameras.
- Working with database;
- Data analysis ;
- Work with Git or other code versioning platform;
- Code testing;
- Small scale electronic projects;

-May be required to travel for short durations (courses, conferences, meetings, trials, etc.);
-May be required to work overtime;
-May be required to work outside in adverse conditions;
-May be required to participate in other research and development tasks, as and when required.
