The intent of this selection process is to staff three (3) Conservator positions through the Canadian Conservation Institute's (CCI) 1-year paid internship program. The internships offered this year are in the archaeological materials (1), fine arts (paintings) (1) and furniture (1) laboratories.

Duties

The incumbent must:

Participate in conservation and restoration projects by performing tasks within a specific area of specialization (archaeology, fine arts, furniture, etc.); this includes assessing the condition of the artifacts, determining the extent and causes of physical and chemical deterioration, discussing the appropriate treatment with the conservator, and maintaining full and appropriate documentation.

Respond to basic client requests and queries within a specific area of work to provide general information on a variety of topics, including preventive conservation (appropriate methods and techniques for display, storage and handling of cultural objects, identification and mitigation of agents of deterioration, use of stable materials, etc.), and refer all complex or atypical questions to the conservator.

Participate in applied research by conducting well-defined experimental work and practical tests, literature surveys and historical research in order to contribute to the development or modification of techniques, methodologies or tools used in the conservation treatment of cultural property.

Prepare material for the delivery of seminars, workshops and conferences, assist in the delivery of this material, and review literature to remain current in the specific area of specialization.

Draft STREAMs of reports and publications used to share and contribute to the knowledge and understanding of conservation, to enhance collaboration with colleagues and to support conservation.

Participate in general laboratory routines and maintenance and contribute to laboratories’ work activities.

EDUCATION:

ED1. The applicant must have recently* completed:

A minimum two year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution** with a specialization in conservation.

*Recently is defined as within the last five (5) years.
**A “recognized” post-secondary institution is a Canadian institution authorized by a province or territory to award degrees or diplomas, or a university or college abroad whose programs and diplomas are accepted by a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

ED2. The person must have acquired specialized*** training in the conservation of:
- archaeological materials (STREAM 1); AND/OR
- fine arts (paintings) (STREAM 2); AND/OR
- furniture (STREAM 3).

***Specialized training is defined as training that includes courses and workshops on the conservation of artifacts.

EXPERIENCE:

EX1. Specialized* conservation experience that may have been acquired through professional work, academic studies and/or volunteer or extracurricular activities.

*Specialized at this level is defined as having completed two or more conservation treatments in the areas of:
- archaeological materials (STREAM 1); AND/OR
- fine arts (paintings) (STREAM 2); AND/OR
- furniture (STREAM 3).

AED3. Specialized training* in the preservation and conservation of furniture and wooden objects.

*Specialized training is defined as training that includes courses and workshops on the conservation restoration of works of art.
