The Correctional Service of Canada is seeking interest from persons looking for an exciting and rewarding career as a Primary Worker/Kimisinaw.

We also strongly encourage you to apply for the position of Correctional Officer I and Correctional Officer II - Healing Lodges.

Once candidates are selected for the Correctional Training Program (CTP), they become recruits and must successfully complete the online phase and then attend a 14-week in residence phase at the CSC Training Academy in Kingston, ON or Summerside, PE. Upon successful completion of the CTP and the Women Centered Training program (WCT), an indeterminate full-time Primary Worker/Kimisinaw position awaits YOU!

NEW: ALLOWANCE FOR RECRUITS
As of April 9th, 2019, Correctional Service of Canada recruits receive an allowance* of $400/week, up to a maximum of $5,600 for 14 weeks, during Stage 3 of the CTP. This allowance, paid bi-weekly, is in addition to the meal and hospitality fees already covered for recruits at this same stage of CTP. Administrative procedures for payment of the allowance are initiated upon arrival at the CSC Training Academy. *Individuals who receive a salary as a public servant are not eligible. Recruits who already receive a salary or financial compensation through another program while their participation at the CTP are responsible to inform the parties concerned.

EDUCATION:
A secondary school diploma, or a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission (PSC) test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or successful completion of a provincially/territorially approved secondary school equivalency test.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
The candidate must obtain and maintain a valid Standard First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) 'Level C' with automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate from a qualified provider approved by any province/territory in Canada, and in accordance with Part XVI of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

The candidate must successfully complete a CSC Correctional Training Program (CTP) and the Women Centered Training program (WCT).

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or a diploma in a field relevant to the work to be performed.
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or a diploma.
Certification in a field related to conflict resolution, such as mediation, negotiation or alternative dispute resolution.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in direct intervention with adolescent or adult women in a criminal justice or social services environment.
Recent and extensive experience in performing correctional operational duties in a Correctional Service of Canada institutional environment.
Experience working in a correctional, policing, security, military, or emergency response environment.
Experience working with people in conflict with the law.
Experience in working with diversity issues.
Experience in delivering education programs.
Experience in coaching, mentoring, or supervising.
Experience in working in the social services field, such as addictions, mediation, family violence, mental health, crisis centres or shelters.
Experience working with Aboriginal peoples, communities or organizations.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of Aboriginal history, traditions and culture.

ABILITY:
Ability to communicate orally and/or in writing in a language other than English or French that is reflective of the offender population.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees must be able to work shifts, variable hours, weekends, and statutory holidays.
Employees may be required to work overtime.

Conditions of employment

DRIVER'S LICENSE:
Prior to appointment, candidate must possess a valid unrestricted driver's license that conforms to provincial or territorial requirements. As a condition of employment, candidate must maintain valid unrestricted driver's license throughout employment.

For the province of Quebec: Possess a valid Class 4A driver’s license (Emergency Vehicle) granted by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

MEDICAL:
The candidate must meet the medical requirements of Health Canada in accordance with Treasury Board Guidelines.

PSYCHOLOGICAL:
The candidate must also meet the psychological requirements determined by Correctional Service of Canada. Note: There is a retest period of two (2) years for psychological assessment from the date of elimination.

PREVIOUS ASSESSMENT RESULTS
Please note that if you have previously participated in a Primary Worker/Kimisinaw selection process with the Correctional Service of Canada, your results may be applied to the current selection process. This will be confirmed during the assessment stage of the selection process. You are required to submit an application to this selection process to be considered for further assessment.

Aboriginal candidates may be eligible for an allowance for participation in CTP Stage 3 through either the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) or a local Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASET) stakeholder.
