Duties

The Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO), Natural Resources Canada, in collaboration with the University of Ottawa, is looking for a graduate student for a research project on earth observation based urban flood mapping and risk analysis. The successful applicant will be focused on simulation and analysis of urban flood risks using information inputs derived from remote sensing imagery, to support urban flood disaster preparation. This position is currently a short-term (until March 31 2020) with possible extension.

The student will develop or modify sophisticated numerical models about flood-related physical processes in dense built-up areas, using geospatial data as model inputs, for improvement of understanding about the impacts of urban growth on flood risks. The analysis areas are in Canadian metropolitans, such as the greater Toronto area, Calgary and Ottawa-Gatineau. The student should pursue opportunities to disseminate research findings through publications in scientific journals.

Work environment

The modeling and analysis will be conducted at the University of Ottawa with some visits to the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation.

Intent of the process

A student will be hired through the Research Affiliate Program (RAP) with the purpose to accomplish research and complete a thesis or dissertation.
