Assessment accommodation

You will be required to show how you demonstrate the essential and asset qualifications (i.e. Occupational Certification and Experience) for the initial screening through your resume and in answering online screening questions. Successful candidates of this process will participate in the Apprenticeship and Operational Development Program (AODP), it is a combination of on-the-job-training (OJT) and trade specific training. The duration of the Alberta Carpenter Apprenticeship is four years. Upon graduation, the employee will receive an Interprovincial Red Seal certification and will be appointed into an available GL indeterminate position at the departmental journeyperson level.

During your apprenticeship, you will be working side by side with qualified civilian employees and military members to provide carpentry services. While completing your on-the-job-training (OJT) hours, you will be compensated at a competitive rate, receive full benefits and gain a unique skill set.

In addition to an impressive compensation package, the Department of National Defence will also pay for program related costs, including tuition and tools, along with full pay while you are attending your courses.

Duties

As a Carpenter apprentice working for DND in Edmonton, you will fabricate, erect, install, repair, refinish, modify and maintain wood and related structures including: existing wood and building structures, small buildings, targets, shipping crates, storage containers, boxes for the storage and shipment of military equipment, furniture, cabinets and shelving systems.

There is an immediate need to staff one (1) indeterminate position in Edmonton, Alberta. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions in the province of Alberta within the Department of National Defence and other government departments.

Currently enrolled in an AB Provincial Apprentice program for Carpentry as recognized by the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training board

OR

Registered in Red Seal Program for Carpentry

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

A/E1- Experience with carpentry work methods, procedures and materials

A/E2- Experience in the carpentry trade in a maintenance shop environment

A/E3- Standard First Aid qualified

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Possession of a valid (unrestricted and non-graduated) Canadian provincial or territorial driver’s license such as Class 5 License in Alberta.
Must wear CSA approved safety footwear at all times and other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.
Willing and able to obtain/retain a DND 404
Willing and able to work overtime as required, at times on short notice.
Willing and able to work from heights
Willing and able to work outside in inclement weather
Willing and able to attend all employer directed training
Willing and able to travel within area of responsibility for tasks, which may or may not require overnight stays.
Willing and able to lift up to 25 kg; bend and climb stairs
