Duties

The protected areas officer will represent CWS on community-based committees that manage nearby protected areas; work with other Canadian Wildlife Service staff and community/Indigenous organizations to manage protected areas in the Northern Region; assist with community consultations; assist with field monitoring programs of birds and other wildlife; and perform other tasks as required from time to time.

Education:
ED1 - Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Education:
AED1 - Graduation with an advanced degree (Masters, Doctorate) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
AEXP1 - Experience working with external partners on issues related to wildlife or habitat conservation (External partners could include: territorial government departments, wildlife management boards, Indigenous communities/organizations, industry, or non-government organizations).
AEXP2 - Experience in conducting field studies on birds or other wildlife or habitat/ecosystems.
AEXP3 - Experience working with data.
AEXP4 - Experience supervising temporary or field staff.

Conditions of employment

Conditions of employment may vary depending on the position to be staffed. They may include some or all of the following:

• Willing and able to work overtime, irregular hours and weekends on occasion.
• Willing and able to travel within Canada, including travel to remote locations in the Territories.
• Willing and able to travel in boats, off-road vehicles and small aircraft.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
• Willing and able to obtain a Health Canada medical.
• Willing and able to perform fieldwork in remote locations with possibly no amenities or services for up to 6 consecutive weeks at a time, including:
o Willing and able to obtain and maintain First Aid Training certification.
o Willing and able to work in adverse environmental conditions.
o Willing and able to obtain and maintain a valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) for non-restricted firearms, and
o Willing and able to carry and use firearms in the field.
