The student’s work will consist of using state-of-the-art analytical techniques to understand the movement of pesticides, nutrients and metals in contrasting watersheds of Canada. The student will perform laboratory analyses, conduct statistical analyses of the data generated and contribute to the writing of at least one scientific paper.
The work will be conducted at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (LeRDC) of Agriculture of Agri-Food Canada. Field work will be located in Alberta, usually accompanied by an experienced technician. The student will also work in laboratories of various scientists collaborating on the project.
The research project seeks to study the fate and transport of pesticides and metals in 3 river basins of Canada. As part of this work, the graduate student will be collecting water, sediment and soil samples from those river basins, and analyzing the pesticides in these samples to determine the driving factors contributing to the movement dynamics and co-transport with nutrients and metals. The study includes a site in PEI, a site in QC and a site in MB, with contrasting agricultural settings.
This project is led by Dr Claudia Sheedy, at the Lethbridge Research and Development Center of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Our group is looking for a graduate student with an interest in environmental chemistry and pesticide dynamics, and who is interested in exploring new tools and generating new knowledge related to pesticide dynamics and pesticide degradation. Interest in water quality and wastewater remediation is desirable.
The student would be located at the Lethbridge Research and Development Center in Lethbridge, Alberta. One semester would be spent at the University where the student is enrolled to take appropriate courses.
