The student’s work will consist of using molecular techniques and using genomic tools to contribute knowledge on the active pesticide degraders (bacteria, fungi) inhabiting soils in cereal fields treated with a variety of pesticides. The student will perform laboratory analyses, conduct statistical analyses of the data generated and contribute to the writing of at least one scientific paper.
The work will be conducted at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (LeRDC) of Agriculture of Agri-Food Canada. Field work will be located in Alberta, usually accompanied by an experienced technician. The student will also work in laboratories of various scientists collaborating on the project.
The research project seeks to study the genomics and metagenomics of bacterial and fungal communities in soils treated with pesticides under cereal production. As part of this work, the graduate student will be collecting soil samples from treated fields in Alberta, and analyzing the communities inhabiting these samples to determine their potential at degrading pesticides used in cereal production in the Canadian Prairies.
This project is a collaboration between Drs Claudia Sheedy and Monika Gorzelak at AAFC-Lethbridge
Our group is looking for a graduate student with an interest in bacterial and fungal genomics, and who is interested in exploring novel tools and knowledge related to pesticide mitigation measures and pesticide degradation. Interest in water quality and wastewater remediation is desirable.
The student would be located at the Lethbridge Research and Development Center in Lethbridge, Alberta for most of the degree, except for one semester at the University where the graduate student is enrolled so the student can take appropriate courses.

Currently enrolled or will be enrolled by August 31, 2019 in a M.Sc. program at the University of Alberta with specialization in Biological Sciences.
