How does this process work? Please read below to find out!

Step 1: You apply on line. You may be contacted to provide a copy of all certifications, or confirmation of successful completion.

Step 2: If you are screened in for further assessment, you will be required to complete the CFFM Firefighter Pre-Entry Fitness Evaluation. Candidates will be responsible for all costs associated with travel and evaluations. Pending successful completion, you will be invited to the interview phase.

Step 3: The interview will be to assess your Competencies, including Oral Communication skills. This will also be your opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the work.

Step 4: If you are the selected candidate, you will be contacted to complete the Reliability screening and Health Canada Medical Assessment.

Work environment

CFB Suffield is considered to be a semi-isolated base. We are located approximately 50 kms north west of the City of Medicine Hat in the southeast corner of Alberta. Most of the civilian personnel who work at the base live either in Medicine Hat or in the small town of Redcliff just to the west of the Medicine Hat city limits. This is an important point to note as there is no accommodation on the base and there is no public transportation to the base. Personnel either drive their own vehicle or car pool with others. Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to establish a pool of qualified candidates to staff vacancies on a temporary, permanent, or casual basis. When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for a specific job, but to an inventory for future vacancies. As positions become available, applicants who meet the qualifications may be contacted for further assessment.

NFPA 1001 Level II.
NFPA 472 Hazmat Operations.
Note: NFPA qualifications must be IFSAC/Pro-Board accredited.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Successful completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in a field related to fire prevention and suppression.

Degree equivalency

Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) from a recognized institution.
EMT or Paramedic qualification/licence from a recognized institution.
NFPA 472 Hazmat Materials Technician.
NFPA 1002 Driver/Operator.
NFPA 1003 Airport Firefighter.
NFPA 1006 Awareness Level.
NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I or II.
NFPA 1035 Public Fire & Life Safety Educator Level I.
NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level I or equivalent.
Note: NFPA qualifications must be IFSAC/Pro-Board accredited.

Volunteer or work experience in an establishment providing fire fighter and rescue services.

Must participate in the department’s physical fitness and wellness program.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid standard/basic First Aid certification from a recognized institution.
Valid CPR “Level C” or higher certification from a recognized institution.
Provincially required licence for operation of a fire service vehicle with air brake endorsement.
Must maintain the DND404 licence once obtained.
Provincially required license for operation of an ambulance.
Must meet the medical requirements of Health Canada in accordance with the Treasury Board guidelines.
Must successfully complete the Canadian Forces Fire Marshal’s Firefighter Pre-Entry Fitness Evaluation (CFFM’S FPFE).
Must be willing and able to work shift work.
Must be willing and able to work overtime.
Must attend applicable trade training courses as selected and scheduled by the employer.
Must permanently reside within 110 km driving distance from the work location.
