Successful candidates will be required to translate and revise from English into French a variety of legal documents from various federal departments and agencies, such as Justice Canada, the Supreme Court, Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Canada, Courts Administration Services and Transport Canada.
The Translation Bureau is seeking to fill positions for legal translators. Here are some examples (non-exclusive list) of legal streams for which the Bureau provides translation services: commercial law and copyrights, tribunals and administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law, Indigenous and family law, tax law and civil law, maritime law and labour law, conventions, national and international agreements and contracts.
Founded in 1934, the Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in both official languages.

The intent of this advertisement is to create and maintain an inventory to staff identical or similar positions within the Translation Bureau with various security and tenure requirements (permanent and temporary).

Education
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in translation from a recognized post-secondary institution and a law certificate (or graduate studies in law) from a recognized post secondary institution.
Note: Certificates, minors and majors in translation are not accepted.

Experience
Three years of full-time experience in legal translation from English to French.

Various security requirements: Reliability Status, Security Clearance (Secret, Top Secret). This factor is not used at the pre-screening stage.
Translation services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Some people may be required to work during the day, evening or night, including weekends. A work schedule that does not correspond with the normal work week or other special work arrangements may also be necessary.

The selection board cannot make assumptions about your education and experience. When answering the screening questions, it is not sufficient to say that you have the required qualifications or to list your current or past responsibilities. The selection board may, at any point during the selection process, use random selection or apply asset criteria to select candidates for the next phase of the assessment.
