The intent, for this anticipatory process, is to establish a pool of qualified candidates for EG-03 and EG-04 Mechanical Design Technologist positions in the Ocean Engineering and Technology Section, Science Branch, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Maritimes Region. These anticipatory positions will be staffed in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on a temporary or permanent basis.

EDUCATION (EG-03 and EG-04)
- One of the following:
o Graduation from a University program in Mechanical Engineering
o Graduation from a Community College program in Mechanical Design Technology
or
o An acceptable combination of education (minimum of secondary school graduation), training, or apprenticeship, in combination with work-related experience, related to mechanical engineering or mechanical design that totals at minimum three years. This may include military training programs or formal work-related training programs, certifications, or designations, and/or applied work-related experience related to mechanical engineering or mechanical design technology, as examples.
EXPERIENCE (EG-03 and EG-04)
- Minimum 3-years of work experience working independently or under the direction of mechanical and/or electronic engineers, or other similar types of project leaders, applying mechanical design principles to solve marine-related mechanical design problems
- Experience leading or contributing to the design and assembly of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-hydraulic equipment, including the performance of complex calculations in support of mechanical design projects
- Experience using two-dimensional (2D) and/or three-dimensional (3D) solid modeling software and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software
- Experience using computer-based software (e.g., email, spreadsheets, word processing, and presentations) in support of work-related tasks and communications
- Experience researching, selecting, and procuring materials, supplies, and/or services in support of marine-related mechanical design projects
EXPERIENCE (EG-04 only)
- Minimum 5-years of work experience working independently or under the direction of mechanical and/or electronic engineers, or other similar types of project leaders, applying mechanical design principles to solve marine-related design problems
- Experience leading the design and assembly of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-hydraulic equipment, including the performance of complex calculations in support of mechanical design projects
- Experience leading multiple mechanical design projects, in a team setting, including the communication of designs to team leaders and other team members

- Knowledge of mechanical design principles and theory related to mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-hydraulic applications for use in marine environments. This knowledge includes understanding of fundamental principles in five of the following 10 areas: stress analysis, hydraulics, hydrodynamics, pressure, heat transfer, vibration, fluids, statics, material strength, and corrosion
- General knowledge of project management approaches and strategies

EXPERIENCE
- Experience leading or contributing to the design and assembly of mechanical, electro-mechanical, and/or electro-hydraulic equipment design projects in support of oceanographic/marine science research programs
- Experience working in field environments, including, but not limited, at-sea on coastal and/or offshore research vessels and platforms
