Duties

Aboriginal Correctional Program Officers (ACPOs) deliver correctional programs that combine traditional healing approaches (ceremonies and traditional teachings) with evidence based correctional practices (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Social Learning Theory) in an effort to reduce the recidivism rates of federally sentence offenders. The programs are designed to address, in a culturally sensitive way, behaviours that increase an offender’s risk to reoffend. They work in partnership with Elders and Parole Officers to contribute to the healing journey of Indigenous offenders by addressing identified needs. ACPOs are responsible for class preparation, the delivery of structured lessons and assessing each offender’s progress and accountability. They help guide, motivate and encourage Aboriginal offenders along their path to healing and reintegration. Correctional programs are generally offered in a group setting, but the position also involves interacting with offenders on a one to one basis as necessary. These positions may be based in an institution or the community.

Work environment

Correctional Service of Canada is seeking interest from persons looking for an exciting and rewarding career as an Aboriginal Correctional Program Officer.

Aboriginal Correctional Program Officers are essential to fulfilling the Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) mission of contributing to public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control.
