Duties

The Environmental Officer provides advice and guidance, analyzes environmental issues related to laws, regulations, policies, programs, conducts various projects according to environmental program priorities, conducts training and conducts audits environmental compliance. The main environmental aspects considered are the management of hazardous materials, halocarbons, the management of petroleum storage systems, the management of contaminated sites, species and their habitats.

Work environment

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is responsible for the management of Canada's fisheries and the protection of Canada's waters. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), a special operating agency within DFO, is responsible for services and programs that directly contribute to the safety, protection and accessibility of Canada's waterways. Thanks to our 10,000 or so dedicated employees, we are present in more than 400 locations in Canada.

The Department of National Defense (DND) is one of the largest employers in the federal government, providing more than 70 civilian career opportunities. DND's role is to provide services and support to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) so that they can carry out their operations and their mission at home and abroad. As a civilian employee, you will have an important role in the Defense Team.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to fill :
- 1 temporary position for one year at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans
- 1 permanent position within the Department of National Defense

A pool of partially qualified candidates will be created to fill similar positions within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and National Defense.

Education :

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree definition : Unless it is otherwise specified (e.g., Master’s degree), the term “degree” refers to a baccalaureate as established by educational authorities.

Degree equivalency

Experiences :

- Recent and significant experience* in providing advice and recommendations in an environmental field
- Recent and significant experience* in analyzing and interpreting scientific data and writing reports or technical documents
- Recent and significant experience* in environmental project management and / or environmental program delivery

Definition of 'Environmental field': an area related to environmental compliance management, pollution prevention, contaminated site management, environmental protection or resource conservation.

*Recent and significant experience means 2 years of experience gained over the last 5 years.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experiences :

- Experience in the management of contaminated lands
- Experience in the analysis and development of internal guidelines for environmental compliance with respect to environmental laws, regulations and policies
- Experience in project management related to ecology or wildlife management

- Be able and willing to travel frequently to remote areas on small aircraft, vehicles or boats, sometimes under difficult weather and road conditions

- Be fit and willing to work overtime as needed.
