Duties

What to Expect

Indigenous Services Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) is looking to staff one (1) Nurse Practitioner-Family all Ages and Stages who will provide leadership for Primary Care services that are evidence based, respectful of culture, and dedicated to enhancing the health of First Nations people. This position is located in the Regional Nursing Office, Edmonton, AB. The clinical focus of this position is on the provision of 24/7 Primary Care services in Alberta’s three remote and/or isolated First Nations communities; this includes urgent and emergent service delivery. You will be expected to travel to these communities to connect with the healthcare teams and provide clinical and practice support as required.

What You Will Be Doing

In part, you will provide Primary Care in Alberta’s remote and/or isolated communities. The unique context of this type of practice is challenging, exciting and extends the practitioner to their full scope. You will participate in collaborative, interdisciplinary and intersectoral partnerships to enhance the health of individuals, families, communities and populations in a First Nations community. You will provide professional support, leadership and mentorship to other members of the health care teams which may include RNs, LPNs, Paramedics, Pharmacy Clerks, Community Health Workers and Nursing Management. In addition, it is expected that you will liaise with physicians providing services in community who are subject to alternate payment plan structures. As a Nurse Practitioner employed with FNIHB you will perform regular nursing practice reviews and periodic chart audits to insure identified values and principles of evidence based practice are consistently demonstrated.

Nurse Practitioner-Family All Ages and Stages

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) not only provides front line health care services to clients in First Nations communities, but also acts as a resource for members of the health care teams; services include those of an urgent or emergent nature. The role of the NP also provides leadership to a comprehensive range of core primary health functions while advocating for public policy and services that promote and protect the well-being of individuals, families and communities.

Work environment

Indigenous Services Canada is the Federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health, while respecting individual choices and circumstances. The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch at Indigenous Services Canada supports the delivery of a range of primary care, public health and health promotion services on-reserve and in Inuit communities. It also provides drug, dental and ancillary health services to First Nations and Inuit people regardless of residence.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a term, acting and/or permanent basis in Alberta.

Education:

Graduation with a Master’s Degree in Advanced Practice Nursing-Family all Ages and Stages from a *recognized post-secondary institution.

*Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:

Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:

Recent and significant* experience as a Nurse Practitioner, Family all Ages and Stages in Primary Health Care (Primary Care, Community/Public Health, Home & Community Care).

*Recent is defined as within the last 5 years

**Significant is defined as consisting of at least 3 cumulative years of experience with the candidate performing complex activities relating to the provision of services as identified above.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Travel to remote locations on gravel roads or in small aircraft
• Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion
• Willingness and ability to work overtime in the event of a public health emergency or outbreak

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Medical clearance
• Possession of a valid driver’s license
• Current and continuous valid registration as a Nurse Practitioner and a member in good standing with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta
• Heart and Stroke CPR Certificate- Healthcare Provider Level C (to be renewed annually)
