Duties

As a general laborer/operator, you will deliver lifecycle asset maintenance for fixed and floating assets. This role does involve working in adverse weather conditions, wearing PPE aids and working at remote or isolated sites. There is also a requirement to travel away from home for extended periods of time.

EDUCATION:
• Successful completion of secondary school (High School) or employer-approved alternatives.

Employer approved alternatives:
• A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma;
OR
• An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

For positions in Newfoundland and Labrador:
• Red Seal Mobile Crane Operator Certificate AND
Provincial Class 3 Drivers License with Air Brake Endorsement.

For positions in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island:
• Nova Scotia Class 2 Mobile Crane Operator License or another provincial equivalent or greater AND
Provincial Class 1 Truck Driver’s Certificate with Air Brake Endorsement.

EXPERIENCE:

For all positions:
• Experience performing maintenance work and assisting trade workers in the installation and maintenance of equipment (e.g. hand tools, scaffolding, etc.).
• Experience operating, motorized, heavy and light duty equipment such as forklifts, utility tractors/excavators, all-Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s), loaders, snow-removal equipment, overhead cranes or similar material-handling equipment involved in maintenance.

For positions in Newfoundland and Labrador:
• Experience operating a heavy truck AND a mobile crane.

For positions in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island:
• Experience operating a heavy truck, a tractor-trailer AND a mobile crane.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

For all Positions:
• Valid fall protection certificate or rope access certification.
• Valid Marine Radio Operator’s License.
• WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate.
• Current, valid first aid certificate.

For positions in Newfoundland:
• Class 1 driver’s license with air brake endorsement.
• Power line Hazards Course.

EXPERIENCE:
• Experience using helicopters for transportation, construction activities, and logistic support.
• Experience in field/remote site operations.
• Experience in high pressure washing, sandblasting and specialized painting equipment.
• Experience in handling maritime assets, including floating and fixed aids to navigation.

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of employee rights and responsibilities under Canada Labour Code Part II.
• Knowledge of the safety procedures and safety equipment required at a work site.
• Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of portable and stationary power tools (i.e. pressure washers and portable grinders).
• Knowledge of how to safely load and transport goods/equipment.
• Knowledge of the safe and effective use of mobile cranes.

ABILITIES:
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to operate a computer (i.e. MS Office Word, Outlook and Internet Explorer) at a Beginner level or higher.

Conditions of employment

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Reliability or Secret Security Clearance depending on position being staffed.
• Requirement to climb towers and work at heights in excess of 2.4m.
• Requirement to travel for extended periods of time to remote sites via trucks, boats and/or aircraft.
• Requirement to work weekends/overtime and travel on short notice.
• Requirement to access remote sites over rugged terrain and work outdoors in extremes of environmental conditions.
