The mandate of Library and Archives Canada is to acquire, process and preserve Canada’s documentary heritage, and to provide public access to it. LAC also serves as the continuing memory of the Government of Canada and its institutions.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to immediately staff one temporary position for a period of two (2) years with a possibility of extension.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates will be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various, security requirements, conditions of employment as well as various tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate) within Library and Archives Canada.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of two years of a post-secondary school program with acceptable specialization in social science, statistics, library/archival work or a law-related field OR an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience*

*The acceptable combination is 2 years of collection management experience in preventive care or description or circulation or physical control of documentary heritage material and a high school diploma.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Significant* experience in planning and coordination of operations (operations: activities such as but not limited to the production, the quality of work, achievement of the results, etc.)

Significant* experience supervising employees.

* Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with full-time performance of duties for approximately 12 months. It will be evaluated according to the duration, the diversity of the work performed and the degree of autonomy.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of the mandate of Library and Archives Canada
Knowledge of general preventive care for long-term preservation of archival records

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Candidate must be willing to travel between LAC buildings in the National Capital Region and on occasion, travel outside the NCR.

Wearing safety shoes is mandatory

Physically capable of handling, lifting and shelving collections material weighing up to 22.8 kg and of manipulating transportation devices weighing up to 140 kg

Work in a warehouse / processing room type of environment, which can be sometimes dark, dusty and containing mold

To drive a departmental vehicle(s) on occasion

Operate a lift truck and have the ability to obtain its certification during employment

On occasion work overtime on short notice

On occasion work up to 10 meters in height (32.8 feet)
