In addition to salary, you are entitled to an isolated posts allowance. This can range from $18,000 to $33,000 per year, depending on the number of dependants, geographic location and whether the accommodation is provided by the Crown. You are also entitled to vacation travel allowance of approximately $2,000 to $3,000 twice a year for you and each eligible dependant.

This position is located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The incumbent will be a member of a team responsible for managing environmental assessment project reviews subject to the Nunavut Agreement and related Acts and Regulations.
We would like to hire two candidates for indeterminate positions. A pool of qualified candidates may be established to fill similar or identical positions in the future at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) or other federal departments and agencies located in Nunavut. Education requirements
Candidates must hold a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in environmental science, environmental engineering, physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.
Professional requirements
We are looking for candidates who have acquired the following professional experiences:
• Participating in environmental impact assessments or evaluating the environmental impacts of development proposals;
• Providing expert procedural/technical guidance or critical review in relation to environmental review of projects;
• Writing and reviewing technical reports;
• Leading complex projects involving several participants.
English essential
You will have to communicate, both in writing and orally, in English as part of your work.
Information on language requirements
These criteria are essential for the job, but they will be assessed later using different assessment methods (written exam, interview, reference check, etc.):
• General knowledge of the northern biophysical environment and of the principles of sustainable development;
• Knowledge of process steps and important concepts in completion of environmental impact assessments for major development projects;
• General knowledge of federal environmental legislation;
• Ability to analyze environmental issues in order to develop options for sound environmental management;
• Ability to communicate effectively orally;
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing;
• Ability to work with partners or stakeholders on issues either as a team member or team leader on various initiatives;
• Ability to develop and manage contractual arrangements for the purpose of obtaining expert advice;
• Ability to apply Article 12 of the Nunavut Agreement to project scenarios.
In addition to having the knowledge and abilities mentioned above, you are a dependable person who:
• Has effective interpersonal relationships;
• Demonstrates judgement;
• Shows initiative;
• Demonstrates adaptability.
The following criteria could be assessed later using different assessment methods (written exam, interview, reference check, etc.). However, they are only assets, so you do not need to meet them to be selected, but preference could be given to those who have them:
• Experience mentoring or coaching people;
• Experience participating in environmental impact assessment processes for major development projects in a Northern environment;
• Experience chairing or leading, committees, workshops or community meetings;
• Experience working in a cross-cultural environment, specifically as it relates to Inuit culture and values;
• Experience working in a northern environment;
• Ability to communicate in Inuktut;
• Knowledge of the mandate of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada in Nunavut, particularly as related to the management of natural resources.
These conditions must be met on taking up the position and maintained throughout the employment:
• Ability and willingness to work outside regular working hours;
• Ability and willingness to travel on small aircraft, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.
Successful candidates will also be required to obtain a Reliability Security Clearance and medical clearance prior to taking up the position.
