In addition to salary, you are entitled to an isolated posts allowance. This can range from $18,000 to $33,000 per year, depending on the number of dependants, geographic location and whether the accommodation is provided by the Crown. You are also entitled to vacation travel allowance of approximately $2,000 to $3,000 twice a year for you and each eligible dependant.

Duties

You will work as part of the Field Operations team, right in the heart of the action.

Your role will be to provide inspection, monitoring, enforcement and technical advice to our department, other government departments, non-governmental organizations, clients and all other stakeholders residing in the territory of Nunavut (particularly Inuit). This is to ensure education and compliance with federal laws on resource management, environmental protection and conservation.

You will therefore have to:

• Plan, conduct, and document inspections;

• Investigate acts of non-compliance, collect evidence for the preparation of court briefs and testify in court or at public hearings;

• Review, analyze, and evaluate environmental plans, reports and technical proposals;

• Respond to emergencies and spills related to water resources in the territory;

• Coordinate, conduct and report on studies and field surveys for the collection of biological, hydrometric, geotechnical and water quality data.

Intent of the process

We would like to hire a candidate for an indeterminate position located in Rankin Inlet. As there are other positions located in Iqaluit, Kugluktuk and Cambridge Bay, a pool of qualified candidates may be established to fill similar or identical positions in the future at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) or other federal departments and agencies located in Nunavut. Please note that the tenure or security requirements may vary.

• A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

• Experience providing scientific and technical advice, or briefing on environmental programs or projects.

• Experience in environmental inspections or field work.

Here are the assets we are looking for:

• A diploma in Resource Management or Environmental Sciences from a recognized post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

• Experience in collaborating with officials from the federal government, provincial/territorial governments, lndigenous groups, municipalities, or industry on environmental protection issues.

• Experience working in a northern environment.

• Experience working in a cross-cultural environment as it relates to Inuit culture and values.

• Knowledge of roles and responsibilities of government and institutes of public government in Nunavut.

• Knowledge of environmental legislation and regulations in Nunavut.

• Knowledge of inspection procedures and enforcement methods.

• Ability to communicate in lnuktut.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

English essential
You will have to communicate, both in writing and orally, in English as part of your work.

Information on language requirements

These criteria are essential for the job, but they will be assessed later using different assessment methods (written exam, interview, reference check, etc.).

• Knowledge of environmental issues related to industrial and commercial development activities.

• Ability to conduct environmental inspections in extreme conditions or at remote sites across Nunavut.

• Ability to understand technical reports, environmental legislation, regulations or permits.

• Ability to effectively record observations.

• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.

In addition to having the knowledge and abilities mentioned above, you are a dependable person who:

• Demonstrates judgment;
• Shows some initiative;
• Has effective interpersonal relationships.

Conditions of employment

These conditions must be met on taking up the position and maintained throughout the employment.

• Ability and willingness to travel on small aircrafts, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles.

• Ability and willingness to travel from home base for extended periods.

• Ability and willingness to work outdoors.

• Valid driver's license (minimum Nunavut Class 5 or equivalent).

The successful candidate will be required to obtain a Reliability Security Clearance and medical clearance prior to taking up the position.
