This new process is being used to draw more applications - specifically bilingual applicants to fill bilingual positions. Candidates who are not bilingual are encouraged to apply but may not be assessed until a later date (as English essential positions become available).

All information obtained throughout the selection process, from the time of application to close of process, may be used to evaluate the candidates.
Please clearly demonstrate in your application, by answering the screening questions, how you meet each of the essential merit criteria. We ask you to provide comprehensive examples of your experience that clearly demonstrate how you meet the specified criteria for experience. Please also specify your role in the example presented.
The responses to the screening questions MAY be used to assess the ability to communicate effectively in writing.
The intent of this process is to create a pool of qualified, bilingual candidates to staff future permanent and temporary vacancies. We have recently completed staffing processes which yielded pools of qualified English candidates for English Essential staffing.
Please note that Second Language Evaluations (SLE's) will be the first step in the assessment process. Only candidates who achieve the BBC/BBC linguistic profile will be assessed further. For more information please see the link below regarding "Information on language requirements".

EDUCATION:
• Successful completion of secondary school (high school)
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
• Watchkeeping Mate Certificate issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations SOR/2007-115, with a valid STCW 95 endorsement
EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of 12 months sea time in the last five (5) years as a navigation officer in charge of a watch. (EXN-25 or equivalent proof of sea time may be required).
OR
• Minimum of 12 months experience in the last five years as a maritime coordinator in a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) or Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Canada.
ASSET OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
• Valid Chief Mate, Near Coastal certificate of competency or higher issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations.
ASSET EXPERIENCE:
• Recent experience (within the last five years) in the position of Commanding Officer or Chief Mate of a vessel.
• Experience working in a Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) or a Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC).
• Recent experience (within the last five years) as a MCTS officer/shift supervisor.
ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:
• In support of achieving a diversified workforce, consideration may be given to a candidate self- declaring as belonging to a designated Employment Equity group.

• Knowledge of Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue roles and responsibilities in the federal Search and Rescue (SAR) system.
• Knowledge of maritime operations and geography in the Halifax Search & Rescue Region (Halifax SRR).

• Knowledge of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Requirement to work 12 hour day and night shifts on a rotating shift schedule, including weekends and holidays.
• Requirement to work overtime when required.
• Requirement to travel by various modes of transportation such as boat, airplane or helicopter.
• Requirement to be part of a stand-by schedule and work overtime shifts.
• Medical: Health Canada Category 3 medical.
• Valid Driver's Licence (for the purposes of driving a departmental vehicle or a rental car)
• Requirement to wear CCG uniform while on duty.

• SAR Mission Coordinator Course (SMC)
• Maritime Search Planning Course (MSP)
• Maritime SAR Coordinator on-the-job training package
Please note that successful candidates who are eligible for deployment may be given priority over other qualified candidates.
A random and/or top down selection of candidates may be used in the determination of those to be given further consideration in the assessment process.
Preference will be given to veterans and to Canadian citizens, in that order, with the exception of a job located in Nunavut, where Nunavut Inuit will be appointed first.
