A RAP Bursary is available for a project that will examine the pollen and embryophyte spores as well as algal, fungal, protozoan and microinvertebrate palynomorphs in sediments collected from two lakes in the Western Quebec Seismic Zone, southeastern Ontario-southwestern Quebec, by the Geological Survey of Canada. S/he will assist with the core sampling and subsampling, process samples and make palynological slides, and photograph palynomorphs in the samples to prepare an identification key. Statistically valid counts of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs will be generated and interpreted in relation to regional pollen stratigraphies to assist in intra- and inter-basin correlation, and in relation to resedimentation, either from climatically- or seismically-triggered mass movements. Ages of regional pollen zone boundaries will assist in determining recurrence rates of mass movement events in this region. S/he will co-author a report on the results of these analyses as well as writing a thesis that will explore the utility of pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs as paleoseismic proxies in eastern North America.

sciences; and accepted into a graduate program from a recognized post-secondary institution, in the field of Earth Sciences, specializing in palynology.
Experience in processing and analyzing Quaternary sediments for palynological analysis.
Experience working with hydrofluoric acid.
Experience with with GIS software, Google Earth, KML/HTML programming, graphic software (Adobe Illustrator), Kingdom Suite (or equivalent) and/or databases is an asset.
Must have a level of fitness suitable for doing physical work out-of-doors.
