Fisheries and Oceans Canada is responsible for policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters; for the conservation and sustainable utilization of Canada's fisheries resources in marine and inland waters; for leading and facilitating federal policies and programs on oceans; and for safe, effective and environmentally sound marine services responsive to the needs of Canadians in a global economy.

The anticipated number of seasonal positions that may be staffed with this advertised process is three (3); however, a pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar term and/or permanent positions at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and other Departments and Agencies who have positions in Ontario. Linguistic profile requirements as well as tenures and/or security clearance may vary according to the position being staffed.

Successful completion of a recognized post-secondary program with courses in aquatic sciences such as fisheries management, limnology, environmental science or another field relevant to the duties of this position.
Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training or Equivalent
Marine Emergency Duty Training – A1 or A3 Level
Marine Radio Operators Certificate
Valid Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification
Valid WHMIS Certification
Valid Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Water Class 3 Exterminator Licence
Ontario Class DZ driver’s license or equivalent
Experience operating a wide range of outdoor equipment, including boats, outboard motors, ATV’s, chainsaws and brushers
Experience in towing and maneuvering trailers.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair small engines

Successful candidate(s) must meet and maintain all the Conditions of Employment throughout their employment.

• Must satisfy medical requirements, including ECG, with no limitations
• Valid driver’s licence (Ontario class G or equivalent)
• Willing and able to obtain any or all of the following Ontario Class DZ driver’s, Small Vessel Operator Certificate, Marine Radio Operator Certificate, Forklift license depending on operational requirements
• Willing and able to transport dangerous goods using a variety of vehicles and vessels
• Willing and able to travel, often for periods of up to 20 but possibly up to 27 consecutive days with accommodations in motels.
• Willing and able to travel to remote locations via truck, aircraft, boat, or other means with occasional overnight stays in tents
• Willing and able to conduct strenuous work out-of-doors under varying climatic conditions, sometimes in remote locations
• Willing and able to lift and carry, often over uneven ground, supplies and equipment weighing up to 25 kg
• Willing and able to work shift-work and overtime as required by operational needs
• Willingness and ability to travel within Canada and the United States, for extended periods
• Candidate must obtain and maintain
o an Ontario Ministry of Environment Water Class 3 Exterminator Licence within 24 months of being appointed,
o a valid certificate for the transportation of dangerous goods,
o a valid certificate for workplace hazards and material information system.
