STEP 1 - INTRODUCE YOURSELF

STEP 2 - TESTING
At times we will check this inventory for applicants. When there are new applicants we will invite them to complete our MCTS Officer Aptitude Test. To be able to successfully perform the duties of an MCTS Officer, we are looking for candidates with skills in arithmetic, checking, coding, memory and spatial awareness.

Step 3 - INTERVIEW
If you achieve a passing score on our MCTS Officer Aptitude Test, we will then schedule you for an interview. During the interview we are looking for candidates to demonstrate their ability to do the following:

Show strong judgement
Communicate - orally and in writing
Typing (accuracy and speed will be tested)

Duties

What does an MCTS Officer do?

As a Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS) Officer, you are the eyes and ears of Canadian marine traffic. You work on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard to provide one of the first responses to vessels in distress. You also oversee the safety of Canada’s waterways by communicating with vessels, issuing weather bulletins, and monitoring marine traffic to prevent accidents and make sure that vessels are complying with Canadian laws. The services you provide help protect human lives at sea, conserve the marine environment, and efficiently manage ship movements.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

Competency in skills associated with MCTS Officer duties (Arithmetic, Checking, Coding, Memory, and Spatial Ability). Note: this will be assessed using the MCTS Aptitude Test.
Ability to keyboard (30 wpm with 95% accuracy).

Inuit enrolled under the Nunavut Agreement

Willingness to relocate based on operational requirements.
Willingness to work overtime upon successful completion of all Phases of MCTS Officer training.

WHAT TRAINING CAN I EXPECT TO RECEIVE?

If you are one of the successful candidates from this process, you will receive training both at the Canadian Coast Guard College and in Iqaluit at our MCTS Centre. You will experience what its like to do the job of an MCTS Officer in our state of the art Simulator as well as being provided On the Job training with an experienced MCTS Officer.
