Work environment

The Department of National Defence (DND) is one of the largest federal government employers. DNDs role is to provide services and support to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in their operations and missions at home and abroad. As a civilian employee, you will be an important part of the Defence Team.

Nestled in the heart of Nova Scotia's beautiful Annapolis Valley. Aurora crews conduct sovereignty and surveillance missions over the Atlantic Ocean routinely, while search and rescue capabilities are maintained 365 days of the year.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to create a pool from which staff multiple positions of various tenures. This may include similar positions (including lower level positions) on an indeterminate or term basis, including casual employment and with various security requirements.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

- *Recent and significant experience operating heavy equipment such as a grader, front-end loader, and/or dump truck

- *Recent and significant experience operating heavy equipment for snow and ice control operations

- Experience in operation of road plows with sanders

- Experience performing operator inspections and daily maintenance of heavy equipment, such as a dump truck, grader, front-end loader, tractor trailer, bulldozer, backhoe, and/or mobile crane

*Recent is defined as experience acquired in approximately the last 3 years
*Significant is defined as experience typically associated with 1 or more years of work

English essential

Information on language requirements

- Possession of a valid unrestricted Class 1 Provincial driver’s license with air brake endorsement or provincial or territorial equivalent. (Note: Restriction 1, glasses is not applicable)
- Acceptable driver's abstract

- Ability to operate a front end loader
- Ability to operate a grader
- Ability to conduct a vehicle inspection on a dump truck

- Effective interpersonal relationships
- Judgement

- Thoroughness

- Completion of a recognized Heavy Equipment Operator course, or Military equivalent

Degree equivalency

- Possession of a valid Certificate of Transportation of Dangerous Goods
- Possession of certification or completion of acceptable training in one or more of the following: Bulldozer, Forklift, Front-end loader, Backhoe, Excavator, Crane, Grader, Tractor Trailer unit

- Experience in the operation of Tractor Trailers
- Experience training personnel on equipment operation, inspections and/or maintenance

- Willing and able to obtain and maintain a Departmental driver’s permit (DND404).
- Willing and able to obtain and maintain a Ramp DDC
- Willing and able to work shift work
- Willing and able to work overtime
- Willing and able to work call backs
- Willing and able to travel as required
- Willing and able to work evenings, nights and weekends
- Willing and able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required
- Willing and able to work in an environment with exposure to loud noises, fumes and dust
- Willing and able to work safely in accordance with both provincial and federal guidelines
- Willing and able to learn and accept training on other Mobile Support Equipment (MSE)
- Willing and able to learn and accept training on other snow and ice control equipment
