Candidates will be asked, as per the application process, to answer screening questions for each essential and asset criteria (education and experience). The Industry Services Division of the CGC is introduced a Grain Inspector Development Program (GIDP) in early 2014. The GIDP is an, up to, 4 year development program to qualify as a full working level Grain Inspector (PICGC- 03). The development program is based on a modular curriculum of both classroom training and working practicum.
A Grain Inspector trainee will develop the ability to perform the preliminary inspection and analysis of grain samples; grading of grain samples; draw representative grain samples; determine the protein content on samples of wheat; maintain records of inspection data and inspect equipment; delivering grain; monitor the correct functioning of the grain moving systems, maintain records and compile reports; assist with the conduct of official audits; and perform other related duties as assigned.
Grain Inspector trainees will be expected to develop the required technical / behavioural competencies, within the four (4) year program as they progress from Trainee (PI-CGC-01) to Intermediate (PI-CGC-02) to full working level Grain Inspector (PI-CGC-03). An individual’s development will be constantly monitored against the program’s competency standards and expectations which, once demonstrated, a Trainee will be promoted to the next level. A Trainee’s development of the GIDP competencies will be based on an individual’s effort and capacity to learn as measured and reflected throughout the program so that progress through to the full working level may be accomplished within the four (4) year maximum time frame. As such, a Trainee will be on probation for the duration of the development program and may be released at any time for failure to demonstrate the technical / behavioural competencies required and not meeting the goals and expectations of the program.
Successful completion of all GIDP components will be a condition of employment for all participants upon acceptance of a Grain Inspector trainee position.

The GDIP framework outlines the development program details including the projected stages of development, steps in the program and the Statement of Merit Criteria and Conditions of Employment that will form the basis for ongoing assessment and promotion through the program.

Employees must use personal protective equipment (supplied) as required for safety purposes. Any known allergies must be controlled through the use of masks and/or medication and must not impinge on ability to perform the job. There are several work sites where travel between them will be required on short notice.

The assessments will take place in Thunder Bay. A candidate may only write the assessments once, as their test results will be valid for a period of 180 days and may be retained for similar processes at different locations.

The successful candidate must reside or relocate to the location of the position upon appointment.
If invited, candidates will be required to attend, AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE, a technical / behavioural competency assessment to qualify for entrance into the development program (excluding employees of the Federal Public Service).

Asset Qualifications
Experience:
- Experience working in the grain industry.
- Experience in the operation of grain elevators and their sampling and/or bulk weighing systems.
- Experience with grading grain.
- Recent experience working at the Canadian Grain Commission.
- Significant experience with the use of standard business related computer software applications (word processing, spreadsheet and database).
Recent* and significant** experience is defined as experience acquired daily
over a period of 2 years or more within the last 4 years.
Operational Requirements:
- Ability and willingness to be exposed to grain dust / soil, and to outdoor conditions in an industrial environment. Known allergies must be controlled through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication, and must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
- Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any work related site.
- Ability and willingness to lift grain samples (up to 20 kg), to climb ladders and work at heights.
- Ability and willingness to work in a three shift environment on a rotating basis.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime, FREQUENTLY as required.
- Ability and willingness to travel, FREQUENTLY as required, including on short notice.
- Ability and willingness to work in and around moving equipment in an indoor/outdoor industrial environment.
Reliability Status security clearance
- Successful completion of the development program to the full working level of Grain Inspector (PI-CGC-03) within the maximum of the four (4) year probationary period (seasonal employment excepted).
- Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain, in good standing, the appropriate security level clearance for access to any work related site.
- Valid drivers' license OR personal mobility in the time and manner normally associated with possession and use of a valid driver's license.
