Duties

What You Will Do:
• respond and provide assistance to mariners in distress, or in need of assistance
• work in a search and rescue (SAR) station as part of a team of four persons on a 14-day on / 14-day off schedule

Note: Working as part of Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) comes with serious responsibility, as SAR operations can occur at any time of the day or night, and during all types of weather and sea conditions.

As a Crew Member, you will actively participate to complete diverse tasks, which may include:
• inspection and maintenance of the IRB station and the rescue boat and equipment
• provide first aid emergency care, boating safety education and demonstrations to the boating public

Work environment

What You Will Gain:
The IRB Service is operated by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) under the SAR Program, and hires and trains students each summer to become members of an IRB crew.

This opportunity can provide:
• real time experience in SAR operations
• training by Canadian Coast Guard SAR Program Officers (subject-matter experts)

Employment Duration:
• Full-time during the summer (approximately May to Labour Day 2019) under the condition of successful completion of the mandatory training prior to the operational season. Training will commence in late-April 2019.
• Once selected into the program, the candidate may participate in the program for up to two (2) seasons after the successful completion of their studies.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar term and/or permanent positions at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and other Departments and Agencies who have positions in Nunavut. Linguistic profile requirements as well as tenures and/or security clearance may vary according to the position being staffed

What you need to have:
Successful candidates must obtain the following valid documents prior to appointment. The deadline to produce these documents is February 28, 2019. These are not required at the time of application:
• Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate, Level C (or higher)
• Standard First Aid Certificate

• Must be willing and able to work overtime
• Must be willing and able to accept a time on / time off work schedule
• Must be willing and able to work in adverse conditions such as those found in the marine environment
