Intent of the process

The immediate need is staff one full-time indeterminate position in Surrey.

The intent of this process is to establish a pool of qualified candidates inclusive of Public Service (PS) employees and Civilian Members (CM); for various positions with various tenures, various security profiles and various language requirements.

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of one year and may be extended.

Should a CM be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to another category for the member.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Education:
A certificate or diploma from a recognized Canadian University or college with acceptable specialization in occupational health, industrial hygiene, health physics, safety management, loss control management, safety engineering or any other field relevant to the work to be performed.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Certification as an occupational safety specialist, industrial hygienist or public health inspector. This includes, but is not limited to certification as a:
1. Canadian Registered Safety Professional by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals
2. Registered Occupational Hygienist or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist by the Canadian Registration Board of Occupational Hygienists
3. Industrial Hygienist or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist by the American Board of Hygiene or jointly with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals
4. Certified Health and Safety Consultant by the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering
5. Public Health Inspector (Canada) by the Canadian Institute of public Health Inspectors Board of Certification

Experience:
E1. Recent Experience* coordinating an occupational health and safety program (such as risk prevention program, job hazard analyses, and workplace accident management program), policies, procedures, projects or directives.
E2. Recent Experience* providing advice and guidance regarding the interpretation and application of federal or provincial Occupational Health and Safety legislation including Acts, Codes, Regulations, Standards and industry codes of practice.
E3. Recent Experience* in conducting investigations, inspections and providing training.

* Recent experience is normally associated with the performance of these duties as part of your major job duties for a period of three cumulative years in the last five years.

Note: Experience as a member of an occupational health and safety committee alone is insufficient.

Organizational Needs:

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance - A valid RCMP Secret Security clearance.

Conditions of Employment:
Willingness and ability to occasionally work irregular hours, overtime, sometimes on short notice.
Willingness and ability to travel occasionally.
Willingness and ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including but not limited to personal flotation devices, protective footwear, respiratory protection and fall protection equipment. Some of these items may be heavy or cumbersome.

Information on employment equity

Successful candidates will require a valid RCMP security clearance prior to appointment and throughout the tenure of their employment. The process to obtain RCMP security clearance involves a security/reliability interview and a field investigation regarding matters of criminal activity which includes reference checks, verification of credit/financial status, education, employment, etc . As such, the process may take several weeks or months to complete.

Any or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements, and organizational needs may be used for the screening of applications.

Interested persons must meet the essential qualifications to be appointed to the position, in a manner determined by the Selection Board. A person may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications, operational requirements or organizational needs. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Practical and/or standardized tests may be administered for screening and/or assessment purposes.

Random selection may be used to identify which applicants will be assessed or appointed in this appointment process.

Interviews may be conducted.

Reference checks may be conducted.
