Intent of the process

A pool of candidate will be established and may be used to staff permanent and temporary (including some seasonal) vacancies within the Science Branch. This process may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada for positions in Moncton, NB.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects in at least one of the following areas:
a. marine fish sampling;
b. marine invertebrates sampling;
c. phytoplankton, zooplankton or marine plants research.
Experience in fieldwork in coastal or marine environments
Experience working with databases such as inputting, manipulating, and validating data
Experience using software applications for preliminary data treatments and analyses

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a diploma from a recognized college or a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in natural, biology or other science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

EXPERIENCE:
Experience sampling commercial fish and/or invertebrate species at wharves or on commercial fishing or research vessels
Experience identifying fish or invertebrate species of the Gulf of St. Lawrence
Experience in conducting scientific work:
a) in open waters from medium to large vessels;
b) in coastal waters from small vessels.
Experience operating a small water craft
Experience handling and processing biological samples
Experience providing technical assistance in genomics research
Experience in instrumentation and electronics (e.g. current profilers, valvometers)
Experience processing histology samples
Experience in using "in-situ" fluorimeters
Experience in plankton processing and taxonomy (phytoplankton and zooplankton)
Experience measuring behavioral and physiological parameters (such as valvometry and filtration rates) related to bivalves (shellfish)

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the basic biology and ecology of one or more of the following categories of organisms:
a. marine fish;
b. marine invertebrates;
c. phytoplankton, zooplankton or marine plants.
Knowledge of safety procedures in the field and/or in laboratories
Knowledge of southern Gulf of St Lawrence and/or Atlantic fisheries
Knowledge of methods and equipment used in the sampling/processing of one or more of the following categories of organisms
a. marine fish;
b. marine invertebrates;
c. phytoplankton, zooplankton or marine plants.

ABILITIES:
Ability to communicate effectively orally
Ability to communicate effectively in writing
Ability to prepare the logistics, the material and equipment required for field and/or laboratory activities
Ability to resolve operating problems

Valid driving licence
Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada
Accept and be able to travel
Accept and be able to work overtime and for extended periods of time when required
Accept and be able to work standing and walking while handling lightweight objects, and may involve periods of greater physical effort while carrying equipment and samples during field or laboratory projects
Accept and be able to train, obtain, and maintain certifications relevant to the duties of the position

For specific positions:
Accept and be able to work in and around open, moving water;
Accept and be able to drive government vehicles with a trailer and to operate small water crafts;
Accept and be able to work at sea onboard fishing vessels or research vessels or in the field in remote or isolated environment for periods of up to 4 consecutive weeks, and for periods that could exceed 12 weeks per year.
