Intent of the process

A pool of candidate will be established and may be used to staff permanent and temporary vacancies within the Aquatic Health Division. This process may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada for positions in Moncton, NB or Charlottetown, PEI.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in acquiring field data related to aquaculture science, fisheries science or aquatic invasive species
Experience in writing scientific reports

ABILITY
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

EDUCATION:
Master's degree in a science discipline related to the duties of the position

Degree equivalency

CERTIFICATIONS:
SCUBA diving
First Aid
Pleasure Craft Operator Card
Marine Emergency Duties (A1 or A3)
WHMIS certification

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in writing research proposals related to aquaculture science, fisheries science, aquatic invasive species or estuarine ecology
Experience in histological diagnostics for marine bivalve molluscs
Experience in measuring the physiological and behavioural status of bivalve molluscs
Experience in developing genetic markers for marine bivalve molluscs
Experience in identifying sponges
Experience in using advanced programming language (e.g. R, C++)

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic invasive species in Atlantic Canada
Knowledge of survey designs relating to aquatic species

Ability to plan and execute field sampling projects in estuarine or marine environments
Ability to communicate effectively orally
Ability to work in a team

Functional knowledge in the use of one or more specialized computer software to analyze data

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Driver's licence
Willingness to work standing and walking while handling lightweight objects, and may involve periods of greater physical effort while carrying equipment and samples during field and laboratory projects
Willingness to drive government vehicles, including towing a trailer and operating small water crafts
Willingness to work in and around open, moving water
Willingness to train, obtain and maintain certifications relevant to the duties of the position

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Accept and be able to participate in field research activities in remote and isolated locations, and on board vessels or small crafts for prolonged periods, outside regular work hours, on weekend or during statutory holidays;
Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada.
