When submitting your application to this selection process, you will be required to answer screening questions to demonstrate how you meet the Essential Qualifications (Education and all Essential Experiences) as well as any Asset Qualifications (if applicable).
When answering the screening questions, remember that the assessment board cannot make assumptions about your Education and Experience. It is not sufficient to say that you have the required qualifications or to list your current or past responsibilities. Rather, you must provide concrete examples with significant details to explain WHEN, WHERE and HOW you acquired each qualification. This is similar to what would be expected of you when asked to provide a concrete example of a particular situation in the context of an interview.
Candidates must also submit a resume with their application, which will only be used to validate the information provided in their answers to the screening questions.
Should your responses to the screening questions contain insufficient details to demonstrate that you meet the screening criteria, your application will not be given further consideration in this process. Candidates will not be solicited for incomplete or possible missing information.
As an instructor, some of the tasks you will be required to do include but are not limited to supervising shooters on a live range, deliver techniques in a matted gym, assess judgement scenarios, act as a subject in simulated defensive tactics scenarios.
Within the Defensive Tactics Team, our main focus is deliver different aspects of training to both Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) Officers and new recruits, in both official languages. Our main focus falls within two streams; control and defensive firearm tactics and training on the CBSA issued duty firearm. The training that we provide is essential to the port of entry operations as the officers required to be armed must complete a Duty Firearms Course and recertify their skills. The instructor positions require specialized training with a knowledge of officer self defense, weapons, ammunition in addition to policies and directives relating to the use of force and firearms within the Agency.
An anticipatory pool of qualified candidates will be created and may be used to staff TERM and CASUAL positions at the CBSA Main Campus in Rigaud, Québec. The pool may also be used to staff similar positions in other locations across Canada.

EDUCATION
→ A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives (See Note 1).
Note:
1.The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are: ◦A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
◦An acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Candidates who already meet the following criteria must be accepted as meeting the secondary school diploma requirement for the FB Group only:
a. Those who were converted on an indeterminate basis to a Border Services (FB) position; or
b. Those who were appointed or deployed on an indeterminate basis to a Border Services (FB) position and have already attained a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or
c. Those who were appointed or deployed on an indeterminate basis to a Border Services (FB) position using an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
EXPERIENCE
→ *Significant experience in one or two of the following:
- Delivering **firearms training within a recognized law enforcement/military environment.
- Delivering ***use of force training within a recognized law enforcement/military environment.
Notes:
- * Significant experience is defined as being the experience acquired during a period of two (2) years within the last ten (10) years as a major function.
- **Firearms training may include but not limited to, the use, safe handling and instructor level maintenance of pistols or handguns.
- ***Use of force training may include but is not limited to, the use of control, restraint techniques such as handcuffing, intermediate weapons, (baton, pepper spray, etc.) and lethal force (firearms).

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCES
→ Experience within a law enforcement environment relevant to the position. Breadth and depth of this experience will be taken into consideration.
→ Experience interpreting, enforcing or applying legislation, acts or regulatory policy in a provincial or federal law enforcement organization or the Canadian Forces.
→ Experience teaching scenario-based training in a virtual and live environment.
→ Experience in martial arts (for example Ju-jitsu, karate, judo, etc.)

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
→ Possess and maintain the Standard First Aid Certification
→ Successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC). (Will be required prior to 4 day in-residence assessment-approximately 6 weeks from closing date)
→ Successful completion of the Canada Border Services Agency Duty Firearms Course (DFC) for Control, Defensive Firearms Tactics Instructors.
→ Meet and maintain the CBSA Firearms (225+/250) and or Defensive Tactics Certification, as required.
→ Meet and maintain a medical standard required to perform duties. (Category III from Health Canada)
→ Meet and maintain psychological requirements by passing the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2) and Sixteen Personality Factor (16PF) and a structured stress and clinical interview.
→ Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted driver's license or the mobility normally associated with the possession of a valid driver's license.
→ Carry, use and maintain Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) issued defensive equipment (Oleoresin Capsicum, baton and firearms) in accordance with the CBSA’s policies and directives.
→ Work various shifts on rotation, weekends as well as statutory holidays.
→ Wear and maintain a uniform as per the CBSA Uniform Policy and Standards of Appearance.
→ Willingness to work overtime as required, which may include weekend and statutory holidays.
→ Willingness to operate a government vehicle.
