When answering the screening questions, remember that the assessment board cannot make assumptions about your Education and Experience. It is not sufficient to say that you have the required qualifications or to list your current or past responsibilities. Rather, you must provide concrete examples with significant details to explain WHEN, WHERE and HOW you acquired each qualification. This is similar to what would be expected of you when asked to provide a concrete example of a particular situation in the context of an interview.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff ENG-03 positions within the Science and Engineering Directorate.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions within the Canada Border Services Agency with various tenures (specified period or indeterminate positions), various security clearance levels, and various language requirements.

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, engineering physics or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

- Recent* and significant** experience in the following non-intrusive inspection techniques: neutron, gamma and X-ray.
- Recent* and significant** experience producing technical and scientific documents.
- Recent* and significant** experience designing and evaluating non-intrusive inspection prototype equipment through laboratory investigation and field trials.
- Recent* and significant** experience in the planning, acquisition and evaluation of non-intrusive inspection equipment.

*Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last three (3) years.

**Significant experience is defined as experience associated with practical work experience acquired over a period of approximately two (2) years or more.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Advanced degree in a related field.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

- Use and evaluation of technologies for the non-intrusive detection of explosives, narcotics, and/or radioactive and nuclear material in a Border Services environment.
- Recent* and significant** experience delivering training.
- Recent* and significant** experience with Monte Carlo Simulation.
- Recent* and significant** experience with MatLab.
- Recent* and significant** experience in gamma spectrometry.
- Recent* and significant** experience in radiation protection and safety principles.

*Recent experience is defined as experience acquired within the last three (3) years.

**Significant experience is defined as experience associated with practical work experience which could normally be acquired over a period of approximately two (2) years or more.

KNOWLEDGE:

- Knowledge of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s research and portable gauge licensing regulations.
- Knowledge of gamma spectrometry.
- Knowledge of radiation protection and safety principles.
- Knowledge of Health Canada’s Radiation Emitting Devices Act.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to work overtime occasionally and on short notice.

Please note that achieving the pass mark on any of the assessments used does not mean you will move forward in the selection process. Management may decide to use a score that is higher than the pass mark on any of the evaluations used throughout the selection process. Management may also decide to use top-down selection at any stage of the process.
