Duties

Operates commercial building plumbing systems/equipment within office and special purpose facilities (Laboratories, Greenhouses, and Husbandry Bldgs.)
Performs preventive maintenance such as inspecting, replacing components on schedule, testing and adjusting a variety of commercial building plumbing systems and equipment.
Responds to breakdowns, diagnoses and repairs, adjusts and calibrates a variety of complex plumbing systems and equipment in in both office and special purpose facilities.
Overhauls (dismantles completely) and replaces defective parts, and cleans, reassembles, tests and adjusts a variety of commercial building plumbing systems and equipment.
Removes and/or installs major components of commercial building plumbing systems and equipment.
Reports to supervisor as required on plumbing system repair/replacement requirements and obtains/prepares estimates of cost to be reviewed by supervisor for processing of orders for parts and materials.
Corresponds with clients in order to carry out design and implementation of standard and specialized plumbing installations in commercial buildings.

Work environment

Agriculture Agri-Food Canada maintains the 427 Hectares of property and (70) research and administration buildings on the Central Experimental Farm Ottawa at which maintenance and operations of the commercial plumbing systems and equipment are carried out by in house licensed journeymen plumbers in the Province of Ontario. These buildings and supporting infrastructure make up the National Historic site of the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa located within the City of Ottawa core. This site is also home to the Dominion Arboretum, Ornamental Gardens, Ottawa Research and Development Centre as well as the Canadian Agriculture and Food Museum.
The site is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists each year and is also used as a learning location for many local students.
As an active research Centre, the CEF also draws the interest of scientists and students from all over the world for learning and collaborations.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff a full-time permanent Plumber

Anticipatory: A pool of partially qualified candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions on a permanent full-time or part-time basis or on a temporary full-time or part-time basis for the locations indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, he/she may be considered for acting, deployment, assignment or secondment opportunities.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Occupational Certification:
Possession of a valid Ontario or inter-provincial Certificate of plumbing (Journeyman Level)

Degree equivalency

Experience in operations, maintenance, repair and new installation of plumbing system components and equipment in a large commercial building and/or research laboratory.

Experience performing scheduled preventative maintenance and diagnostic testing on commercial building and/or research laboratory plumbing systems and equipment.

Experience in providing in-house maintenance and emergency repairs to commercial building and/or research laboratory systems and equipment.

Ability to operate & maintain building plumbing systems.

Ability to interpret mechanical drawings and specifications, and to estimate cost of material and time.

Ability to maintain, modify and install reverse osmosis/distill water and heating systems, as well as automatic watering equipment.

Physically fit to perform the duties of the position including lifting moderate to heavy weight items, 25kg and frequent bending
