Duties

Under the supervision of a research scientist in conjunction with a university professor from the university where the student is recruited, the candidate will conduct research in the area of microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry and chemistry, such as determining phage receptors on host bacteria, stabilize phage and its host for field application and other work as requested.

Work environment

The lab is located at the Guelph Research and Development Centre – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (Guelph, On). The incumbent will apply chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biological and microbiological techniques and be working with a food safety research team. The project aims for developing alternative to antibiotics to study phage-host interaction and stabilize phages to control Fire Blight disease in apple orchards.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

MSc of Science degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry or relevant field.

Currently enrolled or eligible to be enrolled in a full time PhD program at the Wilfrid Laurier University with specialization in Biology and Chemistry (Biotic Interaction).

Degree equivalency

Experience in culturing bacteria

Experience in molecular biological techniques (e.g. but not limited to: PCR, cloning, protein characterization)

Note: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
