Under the direction of a CCG Officer, this position carries out maintenance, operational and custodial services for the Watchkeeping Engineer of a Canadian Coast Guard ship, as well as duties in the marine environment as part of the Canadian Coast Guard’s federal mandate. Key duties may include:
• Assisting in operating, maintaining and repairing ship machinery and equipment;
• Participating in fueling, lube oil transfer and waste oil products handling, and the production, transfer, testing and treatment of potable water;
• Conducting rigging in support of engine room lifting activities;
• Participating in damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations.

1. Marine Emergency Duties Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) – Basic Safety
2. Marine Emergency Duties STCW – Survival Craft
*Note: if you are in possession of the former MED A1, B1 and B2, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the 2 courses listed above.
3. Marine First Aid (can be Marine Basic First Aid, Marine Advanced First Aid, or Occupational First Aid Level 3)

Experience:
Experience working in a Marine environment
Experience working at sea

Knowledge of the maintenance and operation of engines and mechanical equipment, including the use of hand tools for minor repairs
Knowledge of safe working practices in the maintenance and operation of engines and mechanical equipment
Knowledge of marine watchkeeping practices, procedures and standards
Abilities:
Ability to assist in the maintenance of ship’s machinery
Ability to work safely and independently
Reliability Status security clearance
• Valid Medical (new hires: Transport Canada Marine Medical or Health Canada Periodic 3)
• Valid Passport
• Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program – RPP
• Must be willing to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear and maintain job related personal safety equipment
• Must be willing and able to be deployed
• Must be willing and able to perform Overtime work as required, often on short notice
• Must be willing and able to work shiftwork
• Must be willing and able to work aboard a vessel for up to 42 consecutive days
• Must be willing and able to travel by air, land, or by sea
