The Department of National Defence (DND) is one of the largest federal government employers, offering over 70 different types of civilian career opportunities. Education:
- Having a Mechanical Engineering Technician or Technologist diploma from a recognized institute, or a combination of an *acceptable combination of education and experience.
*Acceptable combination of education and experience means a high school diploma in addition to a minimum of eight years’ experience as a welder.

Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience ( obtained within the last 7 years) in performing welding operations and repairing mechanical structures using at least three of the four welding processes: gas tungsten arc welding, flux cored arc welding, gas metal arc welding and shielded metal arc welding.
- Experience in conducting and preparing weld repair instructions and weld procedure data sheets.
- Experience in welding aluminum, steel, and stainless steel materials.
- Experience in evaluating welds in accordance with industrial or aerospace welding standards.
- Experience in maintaining equipment used in a welding shop.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of welding processes, materials weldability, and weld characterization.
- Knowledge of welding standards and inspection methodologies.
