Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a biological science, or in a field relevant to the position.
At least two years of experience conducting scientific activities in one of the following areas of mammalian or fisheries biology: population science, stock assessment, habitat science, ecosystem science, or risk assessment.
Significant experience in conducting quantitative analyses and interpreting complex data using statistical analytical techniques or tools associated with ecological studies, oceanography, or stock, ecosystem or risk assessments.
Experience in preparing and writing scientific papers or technical documents.
Experience working in fish population science, population dynamics or stock assessment.
Experience working in fish habitat science, risk assessment, or predator–prey interactions.
Experience working in mammals science.
Experience working in marine mammals science.
Experience working in ecosystems science.
Experience working in biodiversity science or conservation biology.
Experience in using statistical software or GIS software such as ARC GIS or QGIS such as R, Matlab, or SAS.
Experience working in species-at-risk science.
Experience working in fisheries science, including fisheries-environment interactions.
Experience in developing statistical models, in particular those related to stock assessment, bioenergetics, movement patterns, or risk assessment.
Experience in the assessment of the status and risk exposure of aquatic species, habitat, or ecosystems to generate science advice (e.g. in fisheries stock assessments, ecosystem assessments, marine mammals, critical habitat evaluations, spatial analyses of movement data, marine conservation).
Experience supporting Marine Protected Areas or other ocean area-based conservation measures.
Experience in managing scientific projects and teams.
Experience collaborating on research with partners (including academic, government, industry, and international).
Experience conducting scientific work in open waters from small vessels or from aircraft.
Experience working in remote areas.
Experience in activities related to fieldwork (e.g., operating remote field camps; operating all-terrain vehicles; operating, trailering and launching small boats; working with nets; aerial surveys; SCUBA diving; animal handling).
Experience with remote sensing technologies (e.g. gliders, drones, surface and underwater autonomous vehicles, floats), or other modern sampling/data collection and/or dissemination technologies (e.g. passive or active underwater acoustics, data storage tags, satellite telemetry).
Experience analyzing data from systematic line-transect surveys to provide abundance estimates or habitat use information.
Experience in the development or use of databases.
Experience with spatial analyses.
Experience working with the marine or fishing industry, indigenous organizations, or stakeholder groups.
Experience developing and providing science-based advice and recommendations to scientists, managers, or stakeholders.
Experience with DFO’s Canadian Science Advisory processes, policies, and publications.
Experience negotiating and managing contracts or funding agreements.
1. Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course on «Experimental Fish» in accordance with certification by the Animal Welfare Committee of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
2. Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course to obtain a permit for detaining and acquiring fire arms;
3. Accept and be capable of using firearms with the aim of killing marine mammals as part of sampling programs.
4. Accept and have the capacity to work aboard various platforms including helicopters, small planes, and boats of various sizes as required.

Accept and be able to work at sea or in the field in remote or isolated environments and under primitive conditions (e.g. camping) for periods of up to 6 weeks consecutive weeks, and for periods that could exceed 10 weeks per year.
Accept or be qualified to operate small vessels in accordance with certification by Transport Canada or accept to follow and succeed in acquiring this certificate.
