Transport Canada Certificate of Competency – Master 500 Gross Tonnage, Domestic.

Experience

Streams 1 and 2
Experience working on the British Columbia coast conducting Longlining or Trawling.

Stream 1
Significant Experience** working as one or more of the following: Master, Mate, twine-hand, or leading seaman onboard a Fishing Vessel in the Commercial Fishing Industry conducting trawl and longline operations.

Stream 2
Significant Experience** working as Master or Mate onboard a Fishing Vessel in the Commercial Fishing Industry conducting trawl or longline operations.

*Note: The former Marine Emergency Duties A1, B1, and B2, will be accepted in lieu of the two MED courses above

**Significant Experience is defined as 336 operational days on cycle (Lay Day, 46.6 averaging, and/or, 42 averaging crewing system. Conventional crewing system will be pro-rated)

Stream 1 and Stream 2

Experience working on Canadian Coast Guard Fishery Research/Science vessels with longlining and trawling.
Experience working on the BC coast conducting longlining and trawling.

Knowledge of small vessel systems, maintenance and basic engineering knowledge.
Knowledge of Commercial Fishing practices and procedures for longlining and trawling.

Driver’s License - Valid Class 5

Valid Medical (Transport Canada Marine Medical or Health Canada Periodic 3).
Valid Passport.
Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the CSA Respiratory Protection standards.
Must be willing and able to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard Uniform Standards, inclusive of CSA approved safety footwear, and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
Must be willing and able to be deployed.
Must be willing and able to perform Overtime work as required, often on short notice.
Must be willing and able to work shiftwork.
Must be willing and able to work aboard a vessel for up to 42 consecutive days.
Must be willing and able to travel by air, land, or by sea.
Marine First Aid (marine basic 1st Aid, Marine Advanced 1st Aid, or Occupational 1st Aid-Level 3).

Information on employment equity

This process is being used to qualify candidates to two groups/levels namely SO-MAO 2 (Fishing Master on a Near Shore Fisheries Research Vessel), and SO-MAO-4 (Commanding Officer on a Near Shore Fisheries Research Vessel). Although these positions will be staffed using one process the minimum requirements for occupational certification and experience will be different for each level.

The responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of Fishing gear (primarily longlining and trawling) and deck officer duties.

Candidates must meet all of the essential qualifications to be appointed to a position.

Asset qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Candidates must submit a covering letter with detailed information on how they meet all essential and asset qualifications. Format and content may be used to assess some criteria, including the ability to communicate in writing. The cover letter must offer sufficient detail to demonstrate depth and breadth of experience (e.g. number of cycles/days, vessel, program, etc.).

A résumé must be included at the end of the cover letter.

Candidates must also submit supporting documentation (to be used as part of the assessment):

Supporting documentation may include copies or scans of certificates, testimonials, discharge books, etc... Where no supporting documentation is available to verify experience, applicants are asked to provide a reference for verification. Failing to provide supporting evidence of credentials could result in the application being rejected.

Any previous supervisors, subordinates, support personnel, client groups and/or performance agreements may be used in the assessment.

An interview and/or written exam may be administered.

Candidates will not be solicited for incomplete or missing information.
