Work environment

The Correctional Service of Canada is seeking interest from persons looking for an exciting and rewarding career as a Correctional Officer.

Correctional Officers are essential to fulfilling the Correctional Service of Canada's (CSC) mission of enhancing public safety by actively encouraging and assisting offenders to become law-abiding citizens, while exercising reasonable, safe, secure, and humane control. Intent of the process

The CSC will periodically access the applications received and contact applicants selected for further assessment. This is an ongoing inventory of applicants used to create pools of partially assessed candidates. Once candidates are selected for the Correctional Training Program (CTP), they become recruits and must successfully complete the online phase and then attend a 12-week in residence phase at the CSC Training Academy in Kingston, ON. There is NO REMUNERATION while on CTP.

Candidates must be willing to relocate if required.

EDUCATION
A secondary school diploma, or a satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission (PSC) test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma; or successful completion of a provincially/territorially approved secondary school equivalency test.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION
Candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Standard First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) 'Level C' with automated external defibrillator (AED) certificate from a qualified provider approved by any province/territory in Canada, and in accordance with Part XVI of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

The candidate must successfully complete the CSC Correctional Training Program (CTP). There is NO REMUNERATION while on the Correctional Training Program.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION
Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a degree or a diploma in a field relevant to the work to be performed.

Certification in a field related to conflict resolution, such as mediation, negotiation or alternative dispute resolution.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
Experience working in a correctional, policing, security, military, or emergency response environment.

Experience working with Aboriginal peoples, communities or organizations.
Experience in delivering education programs.
Experience in coaching, mentoring, or supervising.
Experience in working in the social services field, such as addictions, mediation, family violence, mental health, crisis centres or shelters.

DRIVER'S LICENCE
Prior to appointment, candidates must possess a valid unrestricted driver's licence that conforms to provincial or territorial requirements. As a condition of employment, candidates must maintain a valid unrestricted driver's licence throughout employment.

For positions located in the Quebec region: Candidates must obtain and maintain a valid Class 4A driver's licence (Emergency Vehicle) granted by the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

MEDICAL

Candidates may be assessed through written exams, interview/reference checks and psychological assessment. Successful candidates will be placed in a partially assessed pool of candidates for selection. Those selected will be invited to attend CSC's Correctional Training Program (CTP).

Interested candidates must meet each essential qualification to be appointed to the position. A candidate may be appointed to the position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

In order to qualify for appointment to a Correctional Officer position, all candidates must successfully complete and pass the Correctional Training Program (CTP). Aboriginal candidates may be eligible for an allowance for participation in CTP Stage 3 through either the Native Women's Association of Canada (NWAC) or a local Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy (ASET) stakeholder.
