The Meteorological Service of Canada recruits new Meteorologists to replace or augment the complement of its operational Meteorologists. This Meteorologist Occupational Training Program (MOTP) allows for the training and development of MSC recruits which leads to various career streams. Highly experienced Operational Meteorologists are the primary "feeder group" of the meteorological and scientific workforce within the MSC and Environment and Climate Change Canada as a whole.
There are a variety of career opportunities for meteorologists at Environment and Climate Change Canada. Some choose to specialize in operational meteorology, in service delivery, or in management. Others choose to specialize in the development of prediction systems and the technological transfer from research to operations. All career streams offer the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team.
Training Locations:
MT-01 Meteorologist Intern. Approximatively 7 months in class at one of the following work locations:

Plus an additional 3 months on-the-job training at one of the possible work locations cited below.

An anticipatory pool of qualified candidates will be created and could be used to offer initial appointments on an indeterminate (permanent) basis at the MT-01 and MT-02 levels then progressing to the MT-03 level conditional upon the successful completion of the Meteorologist Occupational Training Program. If indeterminate employees of the core public service are selected within this process, acting appointments, assignments and secondments could be made in the course of the developmental program and until the MT-03 indeterminate appointments are made.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Education:
Streams MT-01, MT-02 and MT-03
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in meteorology;
OR
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics and a degree or certificate in meteorology;
OR
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in Mathematics and a degree or certificate in meteorology;
OR
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in sciences and a degree or certificate in meteorology.
Notwithstanding the nature or field of the degree mentioned above, the applicant's university transcript must encompass, as a minimum prerequisite, the following courses :
- minimum of 30 credits in physics and mathematics or the equivalent of 10 courses of about 45 lecture hours each*;
- dynamic meteorology course ;
- thermodynamic meteorology course;
- synoptic meteorology course;
- three (3) other meteorology related courses.
*For courses not offered directly by the Departments of Physics or
Mathematics, an equivalency may count toward the 30 credits if the
applicant provides proof of equivalency from the post-secondary
institution.
The degree or certificate in Meteorology, if applicable, must be completed no later than June 30, 2018 and the proof of completion of these courses must be sent as soon as possible but no later than July 31, 2018.
Those with foreign education credentials MUST submit a Foreign Educational Credential Assessment.

- Successful completion of the Meteorologist Operational Internship Program (MOIP) or an equivalent training program approved by Environment Canada.
Stream MT-03 only
- Successfull completion of Environment Canada's Meteorologist Occupational Training Program or an equivalent training program approved by Environment Canada.

While all essential qualifications have to be met, not all the asset qualifications and organizational needs advertised will necessarily be used when making any appointment from the process. Candidates must clearly demonstrate IN THEIR RÉSUMÉ how they meet the education and experience criteria listed in the assets qualifications if they do meet any. Failure to provide this information may result in the asset criteria being considered not met.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Graduation with a Master's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics, or in another science related to the position;
- University courses from a recognized post-secondary institution in Communications, Physical Geography, Geomatics, Hydrology, Physical Oceanography, Land surface modelling, Risk Analysis, Impact Assessment, Air Quality, Climatology, Engineering or Informatics.
Experience:
- Experience in writing case studies or scientific reports or scientific publications or technical documents;
- Experience in designing or programming or configuring scientific computer systems;
- Experience in delivery developmental project related to atmospheric sciences.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Available to work overtime.
Reliability Status security clearance - The pool may also be used to staff positions that require secret security clearance.
Other Conditions of Employment:
- Shift work (day, evening, night, week-ends) on a 24/7 basis.;
- Presence required at the working desk for the entire shift or operational training;
- Mobility to various offices across Canada is a requirement of the job in order to respond to the Meteorological Service of Canada operational needs. Employees in positions as Interns (MT-01), Developmental Meteorologists (MT-02), and for the first 3 years as Operational Meteorologists (MT-03) are part of a national pool. MSC reserves the right to apply the mobility requirement to all MT-01, MT-02 and MT-03 in the national pool to meet the needs of the organization.

Candidates who meet the educational requirements will be assessed against the Statement of Merit Criteria hereby available, using one or several of the following tools: written exam, interview and reference check. Pass marks will be established for each essential qualifications. However, achieving the passing mark is not a guarantee of an appointment or that candidates will be put through the next stages of the assessment process. A cut off score may be used and top-down approach may be used at any step if there is a sufficient number of candidates to meet the needs.

Please note that if you are selected, as an MT-01 you will first be assigned to one of the 2 training centers located in Montréal (Québec) and Edmonton (Alberta) for a period of approximately 7 months. Upon completion of this training in class, as an MT-01, an MT-02 and then an MT-03, you may be relocated to one of the Meteorological Service of Canada Centers as listed previously.
