The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the Queen's Privy Council. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB enjoys a strong and credible reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 220 employees and 5 Board Members. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially assessed candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements and security requirements.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in materials engineering, metallurgy, or some other engineering or sciences domain combined with specialized courses relevant to the duties of the position.
Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.
Authoritative* experience in at least four of the following fields: physical metallurgy, materials science, fractography, metal chemistry, material testing, and failure analysis.
Significant** practical experience in preparing samples, performing laboratory tests and documenting findings for the analysis of materials, failures, and metallurgy of mechanical systems.
Significant** practical experience in the interpretation of findings from physical metallurgy, materials science, fractography, electron microscopy, metal chemistry, material testing, and failure analysis of components.
Significant** experience in writing, reviewing, and editing technical reports.
Experience in leading a professional group in a highly technical environment such as a team examining fractures in a laboratory or at an accident site.
* Authoritative experience means that the extent of experience is such that the candidate would qualify as a consultant as per the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario, as an expert witness in court, or has had articles published in scientific publications, or presented at scientific/technical conferences.
** Significant experience refers to an acceptable combination of breath, depth, complexity of tasks that can normally be acquired by full-time employment in the field of work over a period of three (3) years.

Information on language requirements
Knowledge of Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and its mandate.
Knowledge of principles and practices for the testing of physical and mechanical properties of materials.
Knowledge in the application of various metal chemistry methods such as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy.
Knowledge of failure analysis.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment including, but not limited to: scanning electron microscope, metallographic microscopes, tensile tester, hardness testers, Charpy impact tester and fumehood.
Knowledge in three of the following fields: nondestructive testing techniques, material and component manufacturing, welding techniques, and material characterization.
Knowledge of safety practices for handling and storing chemicals.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to prioritize work assignments to meet objectives.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Ability to develop solutions to technical problems or issues.
Ability to read schematics and drawings.
