When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for a specific job, but to an inventory for future vacancies. As positions become available, applicants who meet the qualifications may be contacted for further assessment.
The mandate of Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is to acquire, preserve and provide access to published and archival heritage material for the benefit of present and future generations.
LAC is committed to a reconciliation agenda based on the recognition of Indigenous rights, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the Principles respecting the Government of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples issued by Justice Canada (http://www.trc.ca/websites/trcinstitution/File/2015/Findings/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf - http://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/principles-principes.html).
LAC’s digitization of Indigenous-language recordings initiative aims to offer support and expertise to Indigenous communities in their efforts to preserve and revitalize traditional First-Nations, Métis, and Inuit languages. Through customized and collaborative approaches, LAC will offer a variety of services to preserve and provide access to oral recordings in Indigenous languages. These optional services include the development of a catalogue of oral expressions, digitization, tools and training for the digital preservation of recordings, and a web portal to facilitate access to these materials.
The recordings will come from a variety of sources willing to share their recordings for the purpose of language and culture preservation and revitalization (from individuals, community centres, organizations universities, museums and archival repositories including LAC).
In the spirit of reconciliation, LAC is seeking Indigenous archivists to take a direct and active role in project development and implementation while providing LAC with Indigenous perspectives and community connections.
LAC welcomes applicants who will work in their own communities across the country. LAC has tentatively planned for two positions each in western Canada and northern Canada, as well as one each in central Canada, Atlantic Canada, and the National Capital Region. LAC is seeking applicants with a university degree as identified under “education” in the job description. LAC will offer archival training and support to candidates without archival studies education to encourage applicants from varied backgrounds. For more information, consult LAC’s Indigenous Documentary Heritage Initiatives webpage (http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/aboriginal-heritage/Pages/indigenous-documentary-heritage-initiatives.aspx).
