Duties

Students can be brought to participate in conservation and restoration treatment projects of historical, cultural or indigenous objects; provide basic information on preventive conservation for historical, cultural or indigenous object collections to clients; assist in applied research to contribute to the development or modification of techniques, methodologies or tools used in historical, cultural or indigenous objects conservation treatments; participate in the preparation and delivery of seminars, workshops and conferences; assist with in-situ surveys and examination of museum facilities and collections made up of historical, cultural or indigenous objects; draft written reports and publications; reviews relevant literature; participate in general lab routines and maintenance.

The objectives of the paid post-graduate internship program are:

•to provide a bridge between academic studies and professional practice to ensure that the heritage community has access to fully trained workers in the conservation field;
•to share CCI expertise and knowledge through professional development opportunities;
•to increase CCI capacity to serve the heritage community while providing professional development opportunities.

Intent of the process

The position will be staffed for a specified period. The start date will be April 3rd, 2018 until March 29, 2019. A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates resulting from this selection process may be created and may be used to fill the same or similar positions within the Canadian Conservation Institute.

EDUCATION:

The applicant must have recently* completed a university degree or a minimum two (2) year college diploma from a recognized** post-secondary conservation program.

The applicant must have specialized*** training in the conservation of historical, cultural or indigenous objects.

* Recent is defined as within the last 5 years.

** A "recognized" post-secondary institution is one that has provincial or territorial degree/diploma-granting status, or a university/college outside Canada of which the programs/degrees are accepted by a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

*** Specialized at this level is defined as having completed one or more courses on conservation of historical, cultural or indigenous objects.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Specialized**** experience in treating historical, cultural or indigenous objects which may have been obtained through a combination of professional employment, academic studies, volunteer or extra curricular activities.

****Specialized at this level is defined as having completed the treatment of two or more historical, cultural or indigenous objects.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of conservation principles, methodologies and approaches to the conservation treatment and preservation of historical, cultural or indigenous objects.

Knowledge of the techniques and practices of assessing the condition and conservation needs of historical, cultural or indigenous objects and collections.

Knowledge of the science, technology and materials associated with historical, cultural or indigenous objects.

Knowledge of the ethics of conservation.

ABILITIES:

Ability to conduct intricate hands-on conservation-restoration work specific to historical, cultural or indigenous objects conservation.

Ability to contribute to the planning, evaluation, methodology and completion of historical, cultural or indigenous objects conservation treatment projects.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Conditions of employment
