Duties

Plans and executes the maintenance and repair of the electrical components of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.
Monitors the main propulsion electrical/electronic controls during maneuvering periods in confined, restricted or shallow water areas.
Assists in the creation, modification and/or upgrading of electrical/electronic equipment on board.
Participates in regulatory authority inspections.
Participates in, damage control, fire fighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;
Provides technical advice to the Chief Engineer and other vessel personnel on electrical matters.
Compiles and recommends electronic refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract work required for the upkeep of the vessel and oversees contractors and electricians.
Makes recommendations to the Chief Engineer regarding the engine room's electrical materiel resource needs.
Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to create a pool of candidates that will be used to fill in term (temporary) and indeterminate (permanent) needs in the region of Central and Arctic - St Lawrence sector.

Indeterminate (permanent) employment may be available once candidates are hired and have obtained Coast Guard Certification.

An indeterminate appointment is an appointment to a permanent position- a permanent job
A term appointment is employment for a specified period of time with a defined end date- a temporary job

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

College diploma in electrodynamics or instrumentation and control or a similar/equivalent program from a recognized institute.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Candidates who don’t possess a valid CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer may also apply to this process. Candidates meeting all essential qualifications except for occupational certification will be added to a PARTIALLY QUALIFIED POOL. At any time during de validity period of the pool, a candidate in the PARTIALLY QUALIFIED POOL can produce a valid CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer and may be placed in the FULLY QUALIFIED POOL. Only candidates in the FULLY QUALIFIED POOL are eligible for indeterminate appointment resulting from this process.

Six (6) months of service aboard a ship or marine platform as a Marine electrical officer
OR
Experience in the troubleshooting, repair, installation and maintenance of electrical systems such as petrochemical plant , pulp mills, shipyards, stationary power plants, company specializing in maritime works, mines or hospitals.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

Marine First Aid (can be Marine Basic First Aid, Marine Advanced First Aid, or Occupational First Aid Level 3).

Experience as an electrical officer aboard ship or in the marine field.
Experience planning and carrying out a major electrical systems maintenance and repair project.
Significant experience in a job whose duties are related to the maintenance and repair of equipment of high electrical powers.
Significant experience in a job whose main task is related to system automation.

Ability to read and interpret control and installation schematics.

Valid Driver’s License or mobility associated with a driver’s license;

Accept additional responsibilities associated with the performance of duties applicable to this position;

Must be willing to follow the mandatory training related to employment during the rest period.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance - Valid medical Certificate;
Valid Occupational Certification for indeterminate appointments.
Must have completed Marine Emergency Duties STCW Basic Safety, Marine Emergency Duties STCW Advanced Firefighting and Marine Emergency Duties STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, other than Fast Rescue Boats. * This certificate must be obtained at the moment of obtaining Valid - CCG Certificate of Competency, Electrical Officer.
Agree to be deployed anywhere in Canada;
Agree to be assigned anywhere in Canada
Willingness and ability to go to sea for various lengths of time.
Willingness and ability to travel by land, air and water.
Willingness and ability to work overtime.
Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.
Must be willing and able to wear a Respiratory Protection device and meet the standard of the CCG Respiratory Protection Program – RPP;
Hold a valid Canadian passport.
