X-Ray Specialist

Duties

Provide scientific and regulatory advice and recommendations pertaining to x-ray emitting devices, with particular focus on non-medical/industrial x-ray devices. Plan, recommend, organize and deliver programs to assess human health issues and/or enforce compliance with standards, regulations and provisions of the Radiation Emitting Devices Act and develop statutory regulations and standards.

Plan, design, conduct, co-ordinate and monitor theoretical studies, laboratory experiments and field investigations to evaluate risks and benefits in order to set priorities for action and recommend appropriate solutions.

Interpret and analyze complex scientific and regulatory information, research and data in order to recommend and advise management on incorporation of principles, practices and regulations.

Develop, evaluate and recommend proposals for strategic planning, including policy development, analysis. Implement and identify program opportunities, emerging issues and constraints.

Conduct risk assessments and determine implications of results on existing guidelines, regulations, standards, policies and regulatory programs.

Review, evaluate new knowledge and developments in equipment technologies and applications to maintain awareness and provide Health Canada management with advice and assistance in development of decision reports.

Contribute to and prepare/draft communications material for review and approval by management.

Represent the department on national and international committees pertaining to x-ray emitting devices.

Participate, coordinate and/or lead multidisciplinary project teams, working groups and committees involved in scientific research, regulatory program development and to respond to emerging issues. Develop and maintain a network of national and international professionals.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this poster is to fill one (1), English essential position on an indeterminate basis.

EDUCATION:

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, engineering or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Experience applying principles of radiation protection and risk assessment to support the management of risks from X-ray emitting devices and equipment, such as medical, dental, industrial and security devices.

Experience planning, designing, conducting theoretical studies, laboratory experiments or field investigations to evaluate x-ray emitting devices.

Experience interpreting and analyzing complex scientific information/data and research in order to assess x-ray emitting devices and their safety.

KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of physics or engineering theories, or principles as applied to the design, use, and performance of X-ray emitting devices.

Knowledge of the Radiation Emitting Devices Act and the Food and Drugs Act governing the safety of radiation emitting devices.

Knowledge of key national and international standards, and professional organizations involved in the assessment and management of risks from X-ray emitting devices.

Knowledge of radiation protection principles and practices.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:
Masters or Doctorate degree from a recognized university in science or applied science with specialization in physics, engineering, or other relevant science related discipline.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:
Experience in authorship of published or unpublished reports, papers, plans, or other scientific communication.

Experience in co-ordinating laboratories activities supporting a regulatory or scientific program.

Experience in representing government or organisations in international fora (eg, World Health Organization, International Electrotechnical Commission, International Atomic Energy Agency).

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally.
