Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) is all about creating a diversified western Canadian economy through competitive businesses and innovative communities, while also advancing the interests of the West in national economic policy through evidence-based research.
As a senior economist/policy analyst, you have a keen understanding of economic conditions and trends. You apply critical thinking, research and analysis to western Canadian economic development policy issues. You need to be flexible in responding to diverse requests for timely information. You need to be an effective communicator of accurate and relevant advice.
You will excel in this role if you have an in-depth understanding of the Western Canadian economy, the roles of federal and provincial governments in economic development and diversification, and economic data and information sources.

Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in economics, sociology or statistics.
You will also need to have:
• Significant* experience researching and analyzing economic policy and program issues related to economic development, including the appropriate use of qualitative and quantitative data.
• Significant* experience in applying data analysis and economic research techniques to the evaluation of policy issues.
• Significant* experience providing strategic advice and recommendations to senior management on complex policy issues.
• Experience in successfully developing and maintaining positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external partners and stakeholders.
• Experience collaborating on policy-related or economic development-related initiative(s) with other partners or stakeholders.
*Significant is defined as a depth and breadth of experience normally associated with a minimum of 3 years of full-time performance of these duties.

Although not essential, it would be great if you have a Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the duties of the position; depth, breadth and scope in any one or combination of the experience factors; or experience analyzing and developing policy options on one or more of WD’s areas of interest (e.g.: trade and investment, innovation, indigenous economic growth, business productivity and growth).
